What? This appears on the Hunger Games soundtrack iTunes page. What exactly does that mean? Is it just fancy marketing language to make me think that the iTunes version is better than the Amazon version?

As I recall, traditionally iTunes music has been essentially just AACs ripped from CDs. The music here was originally mastered for CD.
Mastered for iTunes means that the encodes are based on the original sources, not on the CD. This means that the CD mastering is cut out of the lineage. Traditional: Original-->CD-->iTunes AAC Mastered for iTunes: Original-->CD Original-->iTunes AAC |

Here is a link to Apple's Mastered on iTunes page:
http://www.apple.com/itunes/inside-i...d-quality.html Basically the songs have been re-mastered specifically for playback on advices and computers. I read somewhere that some people prefer the old (non-remastered sound) but then again there are always some people who hate change or Apple |

Despite the fact that my dripping with sarcasm initial post made me sound like a 10 year old, I find the whole "Mastered for iTunes" thing silly, especially when you consider that you can save $2 in buying an album from Amazon (or $7 if you picked up yesterday's Amazon Local deal) and then run iTunes Match and it downloads the "Mastered for iTunes" tracks anyway. There's a silly badge on the track's info screen.

Yes you could buy the CD and rip it, but for all those people who don't want to do that, they will now start to get better sounding music. Albeit I would prefer the opton of downloading it in lossless. |
