i got a new external hard drive from a friend. i don't think it has ever been used before, it was given to her by a startup she worked for. i think it may have some stuff on it from them. it plugs in with a usb cable but does not show up anywhere on my iBook G3. usually when i plug something in it just shows up. i opened the disk utility and there was nothing there either. it has a light on the front which turns on when i plug it in. it also has what looks like a place to plug in a power cord, but i don't have the cord. should i just get one that fits and try plugging it in, or is that a bad idea? alternately, am i just not looking somewhere obvious?
thanks in advance for any advice on this admittedly rather basic question. |

Yeah, sounds like the drive doesn't have enough power to spin up. Find a power adapter that has the right voltage.

Is there any labelling by that socket? Hopefully it'll tell you the polarity and voltage that it wants. Otherwise, what's the make and model of the HD? You should be able to find out on the net what it uses.
