I go to terminal and open a file using the vi editor.
I then go to the file using finder, and learn that there is no application with which to open it. What to do? Why do I want to do this? I like the file opened with vi because the rows are perfectly aligned; the different widths of TextEdit are sometimes annoying. For example, I often use cal to put a month calender into a file when sending information on a trip or appointment. If I paste the output of cal into a mail message or TextEdit message, the alignment is messed up and it does not look good. Pretty minor complaints in the grand scheme of things, but comments would be appreciated. |

1) Change the font in TextEdit to be monospaced, such as Courier. You know, the same font used in your Terminal window.
2) You can *always* drag and drop a file onto the TextEdit icon in the Dock and have it open it. |

As for Mail, do the same. Preferences -> Composing -> Plain Text. Then, Preferences -> Fonts & Colors -> Use fixed width for plain text messages. Voila!
