Is it possible to boot to a FireWire or USB disk that has Linux installed and then run Linux from it? I think this is possible on a PC, but I was wondering how or if you could do this on a Mac, specifically a PowerBook. Yes, I know OS X is already based on Unix, but please indulge me .

Yes you can. Lookup yellowdoglinux. They sell ipods and lancie hd that you can boot off of. OSX lits you boot using while holding down the C key to boot off of CD/DVD or any other bootable device connected to the computer. Hope that helped.

Thanks, guys. I also found an installation called Ubuntu, which has a free Live CD for the Mac. I am going to try that out. YellowDog Linux charges quite a hefty fee for their distribution with documentation, while Ubuntu appears to be completely free. If anyone out there has used Ubuntu, I'd like to hear your experience with it.
