The French have officially been knocked down a peg on the civil disobedience / protesting power rankings.
Russians apparently do this stuff really well. All it took was a crazy ass punk band to crash a church party and all hell breaks loose (no pun intended). Check these out. IffyFW but nothing egregious. ![]() This chick is clearly low on inhibition serum. Naked protesting? Check. Defacing Religious Symbol? Check. Using a chainsaw to do it? Check. ![]() ![]() Artistic Protest ![]() High Visibility Protest ![]() Over-the-top Self-Abuse Protest "You'll have to drag my skanky corpse to make me leave" Protest ![]() Ode to Flea (we mean Pussy Riot) Protest with Hordes of Color ![]() Defacing Statues to Offend Old People Protest These protesters kick ass and need to teach the Occupy clowns how to do it (oh wait... too late). Jeez, three of the main, um, pussy rioters have been sentenced to 2 years in a "penal colony" for "hooliganism" (the prosecution was seeking 3). Because singing lewd lyrics and dancing in a church represents a huge danger for public order and decency. Fucking Russians. Fucking church. Huge international outcry, of course, but doubt if it changes anything. Hope the girls survive.
Maybe this will spark some real pushback, sacking churches and beating the shit out of some of the clergy. I just hate the pompous righteousness of these medieval institutions, as if making a rude noise in their direction was an affront to God. Burn it to the ground, I say. That which doesn't kill you weakens you slightly and makes you less able to cope until you're completely incapacitated |

I'd been following the news pretty closely up until a week or so ago. Figured they'd get some time, but I'm glad it's just a couple - there were rumblings about seven years from the very beginning given the "horrendous crime" that they did.
But when wrinkling has-been pop-stars start flying that flag, well, I'm out. Sorry. Call me what you like, but when a chick with man-arms takes up the cause only to promote her own shit, I'm done. I wish the best for the girls, obviously. This is a true test of Russia under Putin rule. I truly think he's going to let this ride out and let them sit in prison for the duration. And the church "forgiving" them after the verdict? Shameless, awful, and right up the alley of liars. Religion, basically. So it goes. |

I'm not sure what wrinkles and man arms have to do with it. Putting people in prison for what amounts to performance art is grotesque.

I wouldn't call the Russian Orthodox Church a "church", if what some Russian I know are saying, (they recently moved here from Russia). They liken the Russian Orthodox church to the Mafia (and they are Christians).

I've been following this and am gladdened to see the protests (I've been off-planet so this is the first I've heard of it), but I'm worried about the possibility of things taking a bad turn because "Iron, Cold Iron, is master of them all" - and Comrade Putin is quite unlikely to change his spots because the hard folk he has allied himself with would not respect a leader who waivers.
Those girls had better get used to their new digs. Let's hope that there's so much good will toward them from around the country that they have an okay time of it. ... |

Putin has been cracking down bigtime on the legality of protests and marches for a while now and I see this as Pussy Riot sort of making a public display that people don't have the freedoms they think they do. Being thrown in jail for 2 years because you sang a negative song about Putin pretty much demonstrates that while they've taken on some elements of free markets and freedom for people, they have a long way to go on the freedom of expression, right to congregate front.
And yes, Russia is one of the most corrupt countries on the planet from top to bottom. They're still learning how to play this game (as are we in some ways -- I think our political system needs substantial changes if we're to survive as a democracy). Anyway I think it's great that people are going nuts, protesting this so visibly. A good thing overall, even if the incident in question is somewhat of an aberration (not like a political dissident being arrested and jailed without charges, etc). Thanks for the pics (and captions
).I have only followed this superficially, but from what I've read, it seems that enough has gone wrong to warrant 'going nuts'. It mystifies me how much bad shit goes on in the US (for example) without a whimper (or with only a whimper) of outrage. |

Haha. The funny thing about this scene is the cross seems to be in the middle of nowhere / no one is there to take notice. I mean, how often do you see a protestor chainsaw a crucifix? With free boobs for all? There's something ironic about it.
![]() How long before the chainsaw babe gets a guest spot on Conan or Kimmel? I need to queue my DVR. "The power of accurate observation is frequently called cynicism by those who don't have it." - George Bernard Shaw |

Thought-provoking (for me!) piece on the PRR: http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisf...isy-pussy-riot
I don't know about this adventure from A-Z and likewise haven't thought about it much, but with the hypocrisy of journalism generally, North South East and West, no wonder the world is crammed with ignoramuses and our species hurtling towards extinction at record speeds. |

Good article, AWR.
I haven't followed this case closely either, but generally I'm much less concerned about the fate of artists and other agitators in the public eye, than I am about nobodies who're routinely jailed for minor offences in Russia and elsewhere. It's the latter who suffer the long-term effects of prison mentioned in the article. (In a few months when they get out, the Pussy Riot girls won't have to start looking for another house and job.) |

Seriously. You seem to be channeling the same lack of respect that you criticize. There is freedom of speech and expression, but why does that need to attack what others believe and respect? Can't there be more common sense and reason? Or do you really want to live in a world where anything goes because fuck it, you have freedom? In expressing your opinion, you are attacking and demeaning something that means something (or a lot) to many people.... why? Does that make you feel better? Why do you care what someone else believes? Are you more right than them? edit: I just want to make it clear... I'm not looking to start an argument or convince you that you are wrong... I don't even have a position on this verdict..... but i do find it ironic and troublesome when people are hypocritical in this manner. and the hateful language you use against a group of people is just as bad, if not worse, than what you are attacking. Funny that I should find myself agreeing with BU over this, but that cross felling stunt does kinda come off as blasphemy in my book and I can certainly understand that the Orthodox church is less than pleased with it, and by extension all the Russians who share that particular belief or just don't like attacks on religious symbols. I know the church isn't exactly innocent since they have obviously sided with Putin and company, but I think the Pussy Riot crowd might be excluding themselves from gaining the support of the majority of the Russians by targeting the church rather than by going directly for Putin.
On a side note: It's funny how dissent in Eastern Europe and Russia seems to turn to anarchy while they turn to jihad in the Middle East and hippies/nationalism in the Western hemisphere. |
