Wow, totally unexpected and I really hope the iMac Core Duo isn't it's real name. Two-three times faster then the G5 is an impressive feat if true. Too bad they didn't drop the price a bit.
The Core Duo score of 32.6 on the SPECints is very nice indeed. 1.83 and 2.0 Ghz Dual Core processors with an ATI 1600. Now I'm really kicking myself over that iMac I bought a few months before the iSight iMacs came out.

Wow! The iMac is getting much love and attention from Apple!
Honestly though...why in the world did Apple just not wait and do it all (Front Row, iSight, thinner body design, etc.) TODAY?! What a complete kick in the nuts this has to be to everyone who laid down $1299-1699 a month ago. And don't tell me this is how it works and that "technology marches forward". It doesn't march THIS fast. And never has Apple done two such signficant updates to one machine in such a short amount of time (new body, camera, etc. and then, a little of two months later a completely new, buttkicking architecture). I'd be fuming a bit, I really would. Nobody expects this... It's certainly cool, but kinda cruel at the same time. Why the big October re-do, only to do it again - and so much more, performance-wise - so soon afterward? Did they think folks wouldn't care, or be a bit ticked? |

May have to wait until Apple updates their site before we get the new(?) moniker.

Damn, it looks like the 'iMac Core Duo' is the name. WTF man, that's so clunky. Not sleek and cool at all.

My take: They had and have several design teams working simultaneoulsy. They most of all wanted to do an Intel notebook for MWSF. But the engineering challenges were such that they just couldn't get it ready in time. The iMac isn't quite so small and they were able to get it ready in time, so they decided to release it.

That seems plausible... at least more plausible than my initial theory of "throwing off rumor sites" by building up anticipation for notebook upgrades and then never actually releasing them.

Just called simply "iMac"
No more Processor to the name, which makes sense. I would expect more frequent speed bumps from here on out. Major feature updates would most likely be less frequent. |

Hrm the new iMacs have to have an Apple 56k USB modem now if you want dialup. Has this been the case since the last revision or is this new?

Interestingly, the Apple Store is offering less total RAM with the new iMacs. You can still custom order an iMac G5 with 2.5GB of RAM (512x1, 2GBx1), but can only order an iMac Core Duo with a maximum of 2GB (2x1GB)--I don't know enough about RAM to know if it's just because 2GB sticks at the new speed are unavailable or prohibitively expensive or what, but it does look like there's no longer a soldered-on module, as you can have anything from 1x512 to 2x1GB.

Check out the Apple Store, though... they're still selling "new" iMac G5s and PowerBook G4s alongside the new Intel versions. I wonder how long that will continue. |

Why until they've sold out, of course.

I'm not fuming either, but I do feel like i got swindled a little bit.
don't get me wrong, I still very much love my iMac G5 w/iSight and such, but I get the feeling they released that very recent update to get people to think it wasn't going Intel as soon as some of the other machines, thus inflating it's sales. I bought it right when it came out, selling the iMac I had just bought 6 weeks earlier. i can't justify ANOTHER iMac purchase at this point in such a short span of time, although i would LOVE to pull that trigger. I know, nobody forced me to buy anything, and I'm not claiming they did. |

Hey, here's something weird. I noticed that one of the pictures on the Apple Store page shows slightly different icons for Front Row... could this be a glimpse at Front Row 2.0?
