I was thinking about this a couple of weeks ago and I half joked that we would have another kid when Apple released a new product line. My son was born in 2007, my daughter in 2010 and it got me thinking about the seeming every 3 years cycle Apple is on. So I looked back at product launches and, sure enough, every 3 years, Apple releases something, ummm, revolutionary.

1998 - iMac
2001 - iPod
2004 - iPod mini
2007 - iPhone
2010 - iPad
2013 - ??? Apple TV?

It's really pretty incredible to think that Apple has been able to consistently release amazing products with such regularity. I think that many sort of stop their thinking at the iPhone but the string of coolness goes back even further than that.

Anyway, thoughts?

iPhone Nano

Would cause all sorts of fragmentation problems, but if they could make it work on an iPod Nano sized screen or maybe even in a wrist watch form factor, it could be pretty damn cool. Though, maybe we would need to begin thinking about other interfaces than just conventional visual and audio. Ok, maybe that's a bit too radical. Let's save that one for 2017.

So that leaves us with the Apple TV or the iPad Mini.

2016, you mean.

I think that the iPad mini/air will be out this year so that leaves the Apple TV next year.

Does the iPod mini really count any more than the MacBook Air or iBook (first Mac with 802.11b?) Apple releases. 3 years accounts for two turns of Moore's Law, it's not really surprising that we get something big that frequently.

What? You're not going to go for the trifecta?

I think so because it felt pivotal in the iPod's adoption. I always felt like it did something special to that lineup and the fact that it spawned the nano was key. Some may quibble but that's the point of the thread.
