Not sure there's much to see. Externally it looks more or less like the previous gen G5s except the addition of a couple of ports and once opened up, you can't really see much 'cause of the cooling system.

But if there's anything specific you'd like to see post a reply and i'll see what i can do.

"But if there's anything specific you'd like to see post a reply and i'll see what i can do."

How about the box

Hey just a thought why not contact bafefeats.com
and they can get you to run a few tests for them/us

I know they would jump up and down with joy to do a few tests with you and who knows maybe they could slip you some xtra ram for the tests/trouble

Now hows that for some creative thinking

So what are your thoughts on the Quad? Speed, noise factor, etc... I'm going to order one just waiting to see what the first comments from people are. You are a lucky person! i'm jealous

Initial thoughts are very positive. I'm upgrading from a dual 1GHz MDD, that i had mod'ed with the Verax CPU fans kit and Apple's replacement PSU.

It's far quieter even under sustained load than that, with the disk making the most noise. Build quality is high and as for performance, well it's all I was expecting and then some.

Yeah, 'tis a nice box ;-)

And yes the Quad is Watercooled. There's a nice label inside on the front left warning to unplug the computer and consult the manual if you see any liquid.

Holy shit I loosed my bet on Mac Bidouille (that it was not watercooled).
Thanks for the info.
I hope you will enjoy your new beast.

jasonhh, i take it that you got a stock config with the 6600... are you impressed with it? I'm guessing you are going to upgrade the card at a later date. I use a 733 at home and a dp 2.0/x800/4.5ram... I know a quad will smoke the 733 just wondering the difference between the 2.0...

Right, got a date: 6 days from now, so the 16th November.

Quite exciting, given I have two 20" Cinemas, A 400gB hd and 2GB Ram waiting to go in it....

i ran that test on 2 machines to see the difference in what I'm using:

G4/733/1.5 ram 5:32
G5 DP 2.0/4.5 ram :50

Think about all the time added up when everything is sped up over 1 year!

Another question about the quad, what version of the OS is it running, 10.4.2 or 10.4.3. Thanks.

When did you place your order? I just put my order in today with the 7800, I can't imagine waiting 6-8 weeks for it!

Would've liked to have ordered the 7800 GT with my Quad, but at the time no-one had any idea that it existed apart from the blurb hidden on the store Graphics Support learn more page.

Hopefully, it'll become available to buy separately in a few months. Has anyone heard if this is going to happen?

Hi jasonhh

Man you've had me drooling over your pics all day. My ship date is on or before 25th November (ordered a few hours after the store went live after the announcements) and I honestly can't wait! Serves me right for choosing all the custom options.

I phoned the Apple Store a few days after my order to enquire about the 7800GT and the sales person told me it was available to order seperately but the wait time was upto 10 weeks (that was about 2-3 weeks ago). After Christmas I'll upgrade to the 7800GT. It's kind of weird that the Apple Store isn't currently listing any custom graphic cards (seperately).

PS. I'd love to know what the Xbench score is with the G5 Quad? - hint hint

Thanks for the Xbench score livingmac... thought it'd be higher when someone is reporting this at the results site:

Not that i don't trust Xbench but my overall score when running 10.4.3 was 134.05. I've run the test multiple times and they all come out about the same with the highest up a couple of points and yet are very similar to the figures posted above. I'm baffled.

Hi Jasonhh

Hmm your score seems to be in line with the Dual 2.7Ghz scores from the Xbench site, which seems very weird indeed - mind you most of the scores there are wildly different. I can only assume that Xbench is only stressing one of the dual core CPUs and maybe isn't optimised to properly benchmark the Quad. Then again maybe it is. Your thoughts?

[EDIT] Just had a flick through the macrumours.com forum and it seems that Xbench is all a bit random oh well!

Hmm
xbench is kind of an overall score. If you have a 8 disk raid (look at the disk score for the one you mention) you get a very high overall score.

I dont think xbench gives a good estimate of the things the quad is really good at, like rendering and number crunching.

Xbench is a too overall, I mean if you have the same graphicscard and harddrive in a dualcore 2.0 and a quad, the disk and graphics numbers are going to be quite similar.
