You know, why don't we turn this thread into "quagmire's perpetual update thread" instead of starting a new one every time.

Info in the Software Update window (why should I even bother posting it since everyone can READ it for themselves.. lol)

As follows:

actually that was in the first post.

I know what java does, it's a programming language that is cross platform so you can create something that can be viewed on different systems. (nyah nyah)

my question is what will change, and why do we need 1.4.2 and 3?

edit= I remeber brad discussing it before, I tracked it down....

Anyway, I guess I should qualify my above rant for people not in the know.

The Java 1.5.0 VM is the Next Big Thing™ for Java. It's also called "Java 5.0" which better indicates that it's much more than a simple bugfix release. Sadly, Java 5.0 will have been available to Windows users for a whole year as of the 30th of this month.

What about us Mac users? Well, firstly Apple didn't have its version of Java 5.0 ready until 29 April 2005. Okay, great! It's done! Why don't we have it in our hot little hands? Well, secondly Apple has released it only for Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger. Fine; so, why isn't it available in Software Update for just 10.4 users? No clue. As it stands now, you have to dig around through Apple's website just to find it.

I should also note that anything compiled with Java 5.0, even if it doesn't use any of the new methods, is wholly incompatible with and will refuse to run on older Java VMs, such as the Java 1.4.x that is bundled with Mac OS X. If you try to run a new Java app on Mac OS X without Java 5.0, it'll either die quietly or report a cryptic and mostly useless error message. This caused me many headaches when I was working on a Java project recently at university.

-10 points for Apple. Bad show.

Has anyone got an explanation for this:

I've installed the new Java version, have switched it on in the new java preferences app (have actually done this several times, on and off and on..) I have even done a reboot, just to make sure. But..
When I type
Code:
java -version
in the Terminal, I get:
Code:
java version "1.4.2_09" Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.2_09-232) Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.2-54, mixed mode)
It doesn't seem right, does it?

Yes, that's exactly right.

RTFM.

This update does not change the default version of Java on your Mac from Java 1.4.2 to J2SE 5.0, though Java applications that require J2SE 5.0 may specifically request it. You can change the preferred Java version for applications and applets by using the new Java Preferences utility. This utility is installed by the J2SE 5.0 update at /Applications/Utilities/Java/J2SE 5.0/.
Emphasis mine.

You should have read that entire statement before quoting it.

This suggests that the default version used by the java CLI tool will be 1.5 -- but it won't be.

You have to manually alter the symlinks.

I did. It says it doesn't change the default version and that's precisely where I placed my emphasis. What's wrong with that?

Okay, thanks for explaining guys.

Maybe I'm simply not ready for this kind of stuff, but I have a java-application that runs fine on Windows which doesn't run on OS X and I was wondering how I could force it to run on the new runtime environment. It's simply that I was not that interested in the program to investigate myself and I thought that this update sort of automagically might solve my little problem. Guessed wrong

Ergo, it suggests that running the Java Preferences utility and changing the default version there changes the default Java version for the entire OS, no?

Well, it doesn't. It does for GUI applications, but not for the CLI java utility.

I installed this and (supposedly) set it as the default. Seems like I'm getting more pop-behind windows (and those Java-based pop-up ads) since doing so. Anyone else seeing this?

I'm not aware of any Java-based pop-up ads. You may be thinking of JavaScript (aka. ECMAScript) which actually has nothing at all to do with whatever version of Java you have.

If you're seeing more pop-ups or pop-unders, it can be attributed to two things:
  1. You accidentally disabled pop-up blocking in your browser.
  2. Coincidence.

Brad -- Interesting; thanks. Must be coincidence because I still have pop-ups disabled. (And yes, I wrongly believed the new Java might have adversely affected JavaScript. Learn something every trip here, I guess.)
