I read this on Engadget. Is that true? I assumed the Intel chips would be 64-bit. Isn't this a step backward?

Nah not a step backwards. It'll be years before 64-bit is as optimized and mature as today's 32-bit.

Plus we need to have much larger RAM modules to take advantage of the ability to usurp the 4GB RAM limit.
