I imported all of my Powerbook's programs to my new iMac, including a version of MS Word that is about 3 years old. However, on my new iMac was a trial version of MS Office that has expired. This trial version was set as the default progam. Now, everytime I try to open a Word document, it tries to open with the expired trial verison. How can I set my MS Office to my 3 year old version as the default program? I have tried to delete the new version, and that did not seem to work.

Locate a Word document in the Finder; click once, and use Command-i (or File -> Get Info). Under the heading 'Open with:', bring up the list of apps; if you can see two items named 'Microsoft Word', select the one not currently labelled (default). If you only see one, select the menu item 'Other...', and manually locate the correct copy of Word.
Click 'Change All...', verify this is actually what you want to do, then click 'Continue' to make the change. After this is done, close the Get Info window, and try to open the document. If this worked, it should open in the non-trial version of Word. |

Thanks for the advice...However, this did not work. When I try to apply the changes, it won't actually do it. The newer Word remains the default.

Delete the older one?
when you say it didn't work to delete it, what, exactly, was the problem? Perhaps we can help fix that, which will then fix your other problem. Have you deleted the new copy of Word in its entirety? It sounds like you've still got a copy of it somewhere on the new iMac that the OS keeps using as the default.
(Bryson: the older copy is the one he wants to keep. It's the newer, expired trial copy that's giving him headaches.) |

I was able to delete the office test drive this time...and this solved my problem. However, now I do not have a spelling or grammer check on my word, entourage, etc...For example, when I am in Word, and I select Word ->Preferences, the ''Spelling and Grammer" option is grayed out (I am unable to select it). I am curious if this has something to do with the Office Test Drive problems I was having. Any thoughts?
