I've been on dialup for the last few days, since I'm moving to Houston and Earthlink and TWC are being very slow about installing cable internet. Obviously, it isn't fun trying to look up barbecues, pool supplies and take-out restaurants on a connection this slow. Fortunately, Brad did an awesome job in making this site very slim, so it loads relatively fast compared to most sites.

But, for those of us who are occasionally stuck on dialup, or who have no high-speed access at all, would it be possible to make a trimmed down skin for the forums? One without any images, perhaps? This site is already very fast, but being on dialup is already painful.

It isn't something that should be high priority, but if you ever have time, would you mind looking into it?

We're looking (Brad) into making a skin for mobile phones/PDA's. It should work for dial-up users as well.

I've surfed AppleNova from dialup accounts (AOL, Earthlink) before. It's not bad. The images aren't the problem, though, as they're actually pretty small and usually kept cached. The heavy part is the plain old HTML. The best thing for you to do would be to set your preferences so more posts are displayed per page (meaning you'll need fewer whole page reloads for long threads).
