2003 Powerbook 12" 1ghz with slot-loading drive.
I noticed that the sound my cd drive was making when I woke it up from sleep sounded unusually quiet today. So, as any curious person, I stuck a CD into the drive. The first 4 times it ejected the disk decently, albiet a bit stressed. But by the 5th time, it started to SHOOT the disk, and I mean SHOOOOOOT the disk 4 feet across the desk . Now, I think that's really cool! but... now it won't eject at all, my poor Warcraft III cd is now stuck in the drive.Made an appointment with the genius bar for 8pm tonight (it's 5:13pm right now).... *as memories of the store being empty enough that I could just walk in whenever I please comes to mind* Anyways, will they be able to save my cd? I have applecare still, I think? It's pushing it though since I bought it in november of 2003. What is apple's policy for lemon computers? As this is the 5th or 6th time my laptop has had hardware issues... Though being a 2 1/2 year old computer, they probably won't replace it. Poo, and I have a lab to write too. ![]() |

The included default AppleCare only lasts for one calendar year unless you purchased and registered the extended plan. If you did, then you would be covered for three years from the date of purchase (of the PB).

The disc should be able to be saved. Your drive might be another story.
However, if the disc is scratched up a bit...often times a disc can be copied when it can't be read. I don't know why this is, but it usually works. Just keep the original around for legal purposes ![]() |

You did all the standard holding down the mouse button etc. to try and get the CD to eject I'm assuming with no luck?

There is a location just inside the opening to the drive where you can push in a small pin / paper clip and manually eject the DVD.. Well there is on my 17" PowerBook anyway... Right hand side. Have a hunt on google, or look very carefully along the front of the slot. You may have to push the slieving out of the way..

Well, according to the genius bar, the computer is now on it's 5th official repair, not counting the time I had to e-mail steve jobs about the battery... Unfortunately, the 12" powerbook's slot loading drive doesn't have the manual paper-clip eject method. The computer doesn't recognize that there is a disk in there. I tried the restart while holding down the mouse button and heard the computer painfully try again and again about 4 times before it gives up and continues booting up (It makes a blood-curtling scream, computerly speaking , I think it's saying "BLOODY MURDER!!!").The computer is being repaired with three issues: -Stuck CD -Charging brick is making buzzing sounds and the LED light on it flashes -Audio out on the laptop is loose WHY ME? ![]() Last edited by Ichiban_jay : 2006-04-22 at 04:03. |

Note to self:
When drive starts behaving strangely and fires discs out like rapid projectiles, don't put anything important back in it. |

hmm... I just thought of it, the genius bar tech asked for my computer's admin password... Should I be worried?
I have all my passwords keychained... Including my bank's and credit card's... *scampers off to change passwords Seems highly unusual that they asked for that info, I never had a tech do that before... |

They use the password in case they need to finish booting up, re-logging in, whatever. I don't think you have to worry about anything.
