I have searched all the entries on Safari, but haven't found anything related to my problem which is that nothing I do seems to clear the url list in the address bar (is that the right name for the place where you would type, e.g., "www.google.co.uk" if you wanted to search for something?).
The system is Tiger, updated to 10.4.6, the computer a 15" powerbook that's just over a year old. Anyway, I have deleted the history - the url list was still there I have emptied the cache - the url list was till there I have looked for and found the file safari.plist, and deleted it - the list was still there I have repaired permissions and done all of the above again - the list was still there I have run Onyx 1.6.9 (or whatever the latest versoin is) maintenance and clean - the list was still there I have logged in as root, and searched for safari.plist and deleted all of them - the list was still there I re-installed the system with archive - the list was till there I re-installed the system without archiving it - the list I have now isn't as long as my original list (which I wanted to delete to, perhaps, speed up safari a little), but I still can't erase it by doing a reset of Safari - so the problem has now shifted from shortening the list to finding out what to do to get rid of it should I want to... I don't want to erase and install if I can help it, because I have so much stuff on the HD that even with a preceding backup, I'd be spending days pulling things one by one across to the powerbook again. Any ideas what to do? Many thanks in advance ... P.S. If it requires use of terminal/ login as single user, please give detailed instructions since I am - almost - totally ignorant of unix ![]() P.P.S. I am at the moment working on my windows machine in the office and don't have my Powerbook with me ... P.P.P.S There were another couple of files I found a reference to in this forum (something like com.apple..... was one) which I gave the same treatment as the plist file above) |

Set fire to your computer.
Use lighterfluid or liquid oxygen, and keep the fire going until there is nothing physically left. |

Is the Genius bar meant to provide a place where on can get help with a genuine problem, or is it a place where the most ignorant of the forum members can reveal their stunning intellectual brilliance by giving totally uncalled for, useless, and not even funny replies???
Ta very much |

Depends on our mood, and who happens to be around..
At the moment it's only one of the "most ignorant of the forum members" here so sorry I can't help. ![]() But then you could always try Google, or your manual... Oh look... http://forums.macosxhints.com/archiv...p/t-22847.html Perhaps try googling before giving up and looking for an expert to solve what you can yourself... Ooo.. Look another one... http://discussions.apple.com/thread....sageID=2131162 (You need to read at least one sentence to get the info there) 'Remember, measure life by the moments that take your breath away, not by how many breaths you take' Extreme Sports Cafe | ESC's blog | scratt's blog | @thescratt Last edited by scratt : 2006-04-26 at 04:20. |

Fyi, I did google, but decided that my question was long enough as it is without mentioning that I did not find a useful answer. The replies I found, and there were several more than the two you quote, do not answer the question whether anyone knows of a way of clearing the url - "it can't be done" is not the answer I was looking for (there is in my experience nothing that "can't be done on" a computer). How much effort do I have to put in before his grace allows me to ask forum members for a solution. If you don't have one, or don't like the question, there is no duty to answer ...

Hey, why hold back when an extra line would have made your mammoth post just infinitesimally longer!
![]() And I am not stopping anyone else chipping in.. Perhaps they have other things to do.. Perhaps they are all bored of typing "Google is your friend", or that key is broken on their computers... If you had said perhaps.. I know this is not possible, because I read Google ALREADY and found this or that post.. Does anyone have a haxie or a hack to turn off the URL predivtive thingy that is really annoying in my browser (Safari), then you might have got a different response... Quote:
So, my first answer while extreme was correct. If you cannot... Quote:
But then you will still have the preinstalled URLs in your new OS when you put the new OS on.. and any web page visited after that will add more and more... So.. Perhaps set fire to your computer until nothing is left is indeed the best solution. Another option is to not use Safari. Contact Apple and offer money... Write your own OS. All the info in the above post is from the pages you googled earlier, and I think pretty much covers it in detail. Hence my first reply. If you had had only 1 post I might have said welcome to AN. But heck with 20 you should know me and others by now.. ![]() 'Remember, measure life by the moments that take your breath away, not by how many breaths you take' Extreme Sports Cafe | ESC's blog | scratt's blog | @thescratt Last edited by scratt : 2006-04-26 at 05:17. |

Thanks for your last reply. If your first reply had been anything like it, I would - perhaps possibly just maybe - not have taken it so badly.
![]() And I shall certainly add my name to the list of people who have complained to Apple |

I found Safari was doing this with sites that had been used with Safari's RSS function. Once I deleted them and ditched the whole RSS thing it stopped happening.
