Hey Guys,

I got a question. I recently got an intel imac, and am kicking around the idea of installing XP either now with boot camp, or later on with 10.5. However, I got my copy of XP PRO quite a while ago, and I don't even think it is SP1, it is one of the initial builds of XP.

I read on apple's site they say you need XP SP2, and I have read some blogs where people said they had issues trying to install XP SP1, much less just XP (no service packs). I remember a while ago that it is possible to "slipstream" (I believe is the term) SP2 into your copy of XP by burning a new CD of the OS somehow.

My main question is this: Does anyone know how to do this (slipstream) and how would I do it? My secondary question which is equally important is ... will a slip streamed copy on my intel imac? I really don't want to have to buy a new copy of XP if I do decide to install ... now or later.

Thanks

You won't be able to slipstream from within Mac OS, so you need a computer running Windows XP. You'll also need a CD of XP or XP SP1, and the full download of SP2 (as opposed to the express version). Various guides such as this one will help you. There's also automated tools, like this one.

Well, I know how much we all love Paul Thurrott, but his site does have one of the better slipstreaming guides I've seen out there, if you decide to perform the procedure manually - here it is. It's specific to XP SP2, so it might help you out a bit more.

Yes. I used Paul's steps to create the slipstream cd thingumajig (highly technical term). It worked like a charm.

Thanks guys!

I used Paul Thurrott's Slipstream Guide. It was very easy to follow. It booted correctly on my Dell Latitude work laptop ... but I haven't downloaded or installed bootcamp, so I haven't tried it on my Intel iMac yet.

I assume that a slipstreamed copy of XP SP2 will work with boot camp the same as a retail copy of XP SP2 . Has anyone out there used a slipstreamed copy with their intel mac?

Thanks for the help!

Yep. I slipstreamed SP2 on a 4 yr old copy of XP Pro and it worked like a charm.

The Intel Mac is a very fast windows computer. I only use it for MS Money and some SNES emulator games for my son.
