Macbook Pro HD
17" 1920x1200 glossy lcd 2.66 ghz core 2 duo processor Blu-ray super drive ati 1800xt mobile (256mb) 1gb memory 2 100gb HDDs (user replaceable like macbook) 6.5 lbs 6 hour battery life OS X 10.5 leopard ichat HD and HD isight $3,299 imac HD 23" 1920x1200 glossy lcd 2.66 ghz core 2 extreme Blu-ray super drive ati 1800xtx (256mb) 1gb memory 2 500gb HDDs OS X 10.5 leopard ichat HD and hd isight $2,499 What do you think the odds are of apple creating a macbook pro and an imac designed for media and 1080p playback? I know that there are a few problems with this such as the imac being a consumer machine and finding room for another HDD in the Macbook Pro, but overall with blu-ray and 1080p comming soon I could see apple releasing something like these and make a profit. Look at the sony ar series it has similar specs to my Macbook Pro HD at a similar price. Last edited by Ghost2 : 2006-05-21 at 06:55. |

![]() Why not? Maybe Q1 2007. I'm not sure why the MBP HD would need two hard drives, those things are pretty heavy... "King Kong" just for you pscates... ![]() Last edited by World Leader Pretend : 2006-05-21 at 10:46. |

I've never really understood the two-hard-drives-in-a-laptop thing either. It's a laptop. You really don't need two hard drives. Increased size and weight, shorter battery life, and for what? Some more storage. I mean, RAID is nice, but so are proper desktop computers.
...and all the wolves were found upside-down in a box! |

iMac HD... Plausible. Except for the dual harddrives.
Blu-Ray... Probably still too expensive. I believe they'll start out as an addon on desktops. I'm not convinced mobile drives are ready either. 17" is not enough for 1920x1200 and legibility. Think of the pro tools like FCP and Aperture and their tiny fonts... You'd have to sit with your face literally inches from the screen (or glue binoculars to your eyes )Dual harddrives is the second most retarded thing ever in a laptop, second only to dual optical drives. SLi takes a close third though. 1800XTX Graphics... But that's unpossible! They only go up to 1800XT in the mobile department... Of course, they could pack in a 1900XTX Crossfire combo and say hello to 30 minutes of battery time, but... well... Some days, I'm convinced laptops are headed this direction: ![]() Laptop == portable. These things that are coming out everywhere with SLi and 19" screens are not portable, they are luggable. EDIT: Give me something 12" and 3,5lbs OR LESS darn it! I don't need no friggin CD drive, a 19" screen or any sort of capable graphics while on the road but if it can go on for a whole day on battery i'd be in heaven. Converted 07/2005. Way better movies out there than that colossal turd "King Kong" to be using for mockups, guys.
![]() In fact, I hereby call for a cessation on all "King Kong"-using mockups. Instead, let's make the upcoming Sam Jackson blockbuster "Snakes on a Plane" the 'Nova mockup flick of choice. ![]() I will if you will... |

Yeah, but ever since Apple put it on the QuickTime page it seems to have become some sort of unofficial HD logo.

One advantage is that with dual hard drive bays I could take the HDD out of my old Thinkpad and slip it into my Macbook Pro HD and have it run through boot camp, or I could just keep the deives in a raid 0 setup and have a good amount of space and performance for storing 1080p video. Also 2.5 inch hard drives aren't as heavy as you might think they only weigh about .2 lbs. Blu-ray is still pretty expensive, but not to expensive to put in a $3,500 notebook, just look at the Sony AR for confirmation of this. Many 17" displays have 1920x1200 resolution, I think Dell even made a 15.4 inch notebook with that resolution. Also with resolution independence comming with leopard I don't think small fonts will be a problem. On the ati 1800xtx thing you were right, my bad. Even though a device like this may not appeal to you personally many people would love a large media oriented macbook pro like this, so it is still very marketable. A 23 inch iMac would rule. If they bring one out it should be possible to connect laptops and consoles to it. Something that is sadly not possible with the current iMac.
They'd also have to throw some serious bto graphic card options in there. ![]() |

I'm actually surprised there hasn't been a 23" iMac HD yet. Then again, it may be too pricey for something like an AIO (if the 20" model is $1,699, I can't see Apple letting a 23" HD version go for anything less than $2,100 ($2,099, in more Apple-y numbers).
![]() If it cost only $1,899-1,999, most would shell out the extra $200-300 and where would that leave the 20" (unless they dropped it in price $100-200)? In answer to your question, World Leader Pretend: after months of outrageous hype, that idiot monkey took nearly three hours of my life in one of the worst movies I've ever paid to see. THAT'S what he did to me, if you have to know. ![]() |

pscates: simple, just axe the 17" model, drop the 20" model to $1299, and put the 23" in at $1699 where the 20" used to be. Accompany this transition with a (much needed) price drop on the 20" and 23" Apple Cinema Displays, to perhaps $599 and $999.

the problem with a 23" iMac is that you get this hella nice display built in, that in 5 years will be worthless
. I wish there was a way to use an iMac as a monitor only in the current config!! That way you get a great display out of it after it is has seen better days spec wise. |

Lol, Snakes on a Plane FTW. Sam Jackson saw the title and said he'd do it. He then said he'd walk when they tried to change the title. He never even read the script.

We can't get rid of the 17-inch model. A friend of mine got the 17-inch over the 20 just because she couldn't fit the 20-inch on her desk.

What I would suspect that Apple would do is keep the 17" iMac, drop the price down to $1099, and then replace the 20" with the 23" HD version for $1799. A 20" iMac could be upgraded to 23" without much complaining.. Unless both computers get slightly redesigned to minimize the bottom part of the screen, that is how I see the possibilities playing out. |

There are only 2 2.66 GHz chips planned out of Merom/Conroe/Woodcrest: a non-extreme Conroe, and the second-highest Woodcrest. There's no way on Earth either of those are fitting in a MBP. Merom tops out at 2.33 GHz.
Additionally, 2 500 GB HDDs and a 2.66 GHz processor with an x1800XTX would essentially tie that with most Mac Pros. |
