I have this problem with web pages being loaded very slowly. Cable speed is ok and Apple did an archival
installation and that didn't work. Has anyone heard of this problem? The computer works at quick speed when navigating the sytem but the internet web pages are the problem. Thanks for any help. |

First off, this is a tech support question so I'm moving it to our tech support forum (Genius Bar).
This is probably a problem with your internet connection itself. Are other computers on your network fast on the internet? Is your Mac fast when it's on a different network? These things are very important. No one can determine the cause of a problem if we hardly know any details. At this point, almost anything could be wrong. You might have a problem in the configuration of your network settings - an incorrect value for the DNS fields might cause sluggishness. Perhaps the DNS servers you entered are correct, but they're slow at the moment, in which case you might want to change them temporarily. Maybe your internet service happens to be slow. I don't know. You didn't even say what kind of computer you have, just that it has a Core Duo. Is this a MacBook, a MacBook Pro, an iMac, or a Mac mini? Are you using a wireless connection or ethernet? |

Also, remember that the internet connection is the bottleneck, not the processor. Processor, RAM and internal component can move data several times faster than your internet connection, even if you have the fastest connection in world. In other words, core duo is the last of your trouble.
With internet, others already has pointed out the more likely candidates; your browser or your internet connection itself. |

try this:
Launch terminal, and type the following, depending on your connection. If you're connected to the interenet via AirPort, type this: sudo ifconfig en1 mtu 1200 If you're connected to the internet via an Etherent connection, type this: sudo ifconfig en0 mtu 1200 You'll be prompted for your admin password. |

Sorry I was so lax in the information I provided.
It is an Imac and it has 2gig of ram. I have speed tested the cable modem which is connected by ethernet cable and the figures were within the parameters of the tech at Charter Communications. about 2888 and 240. Charter said they could find no problem at their end-should I lean on them more? The DNS settings are correct but the slowness has continued for over a week now. While apple was helping me we did download Firefox and the results were the same.I am going to a local Mac dealer and let them hook up their internet connection and see if the problem is still there. If it is, does that mean its a computer software/hardware problem? The computer is only 2-3 months old and I also have the applecare plan. The problem with that is that the nearest authorized apple repair center is in Santa Barbara- 2 hours away? Thanks so much for taking the time to help with all this. It is very nice of all of you to give me your input. Jerry |

Just how slow is the connection on the Mac? Is it only when you download files that you run into problems, or is web surfing slow as well? Describe to us what you do that reveals the problem, and then the symptoms that occur.

The web pages are the problem. When apple was trying to solve the problem we downloaded Firefox and that came down ok at a normal rate.
When I click on Safari the homepage (Google)comes up with the web address at the top but the Google box where I type in my request takes about 20 seconds to appear. When I type in say -Ny Times in the box- the list of Google sights that have NY Times comes up VERY quickly. It is only when I click on one of those from the list that it takes 20 seconds or so for that site to show up. Same thing in e-mail. The e-mail show up ok yet if one of them has a link to a web page and I then click on that link- then it takes again another 20 seconds or so for that page to load up. Thanks again. |

You are having DNS issues. Try manually entering the DNS servers (System Preferences > Network, select "ethernet" and click configure, add dns servers in space provided) provided by your ISP.
Edit: To get the DNS server addresses you might have to go to the support section of your ISP's web page, or give them a call. |

Do you have an antivirus program running or something similar that would be scoping out the web pages as they download?

I agree with rminkler. What the original poster is saying is once he's inside google's domain, the search is quick, but whenver he clicks a search result (that takes him out of google's domain) the dns lookup takes forever.
I would guess, once the original poster got NYTimes loaded, all pages within NYtimes.com loaded fine, but if he went to leave NYtimes.com, the problem would reappear. Are you on a wireless internet connection, jdavis61? I have read about a lot of DNS problems with MacBook Pros using wireless, but i'm not sure that i've read reports about iMacs having the same issue. |

Thanks to all who helped. It appears you were right-it seems to be an internet connection issue. My non-tech brain was thinking it was a Safari problem.
I located someone at Charter who seemed to know what he was doing and he ran a ping and tracer test and then I e-mailed him the results. I will call them back Monday and find out what was going on. Lets hope this will fix it. Thanks again. ![]() |

You should have asked him (assuming this was your ISP on the phone) what DNS servers to use

Try disabling ipv6- it's well known that this causes issues, may as well eliminate that possibility. Then, restart your connection to the router/modem.
