Perhaps not entirely, but you can be assured that other companies will be watching how this goes:

http://www.usatoday.com/money/media/...ony-usat_x.htm

After their fiasco with the copy-protected CDs last year, I think this has probably been done in an effort to win back some goodwill, as much as it has been done to trial a "new" stance for online distribution - despite what they say about it being too complicated to implement DRM on 500 versions of the song.

The times - they are a changing.

btw - I'd never even heard of eMusic either - but there they are as the No.2 online music retailer.

All I want is a simple life

I was surprised when I heard it. Maybe the music industry is indeed changing.

I've pretty low view of Sony BMG though and given that the Sony BMG merger has just been significantly challenged by the EU (on competition grounds), the non DRM release may simply be PR.

I was gonna say that Yahoo was pushing DRM free music, but looks like Sony/BMG is the provider of said DRM free music. Woohoo!! Jessica Simpson for the masses!!! Oh wait, no wonder they're releasing it DRM free (for $1.99 no less), who cares about Jessica Simpson?
