(I'm not entirely sure if Speculation is where this belongs... Admins, please feel free to move.)

Forums and rumor sites seem fairly certain that Merom is coming out for the MacBook in September. The free iPod Nano offer for students also ends in September - 16th, to be exact. Do you think there's any chance that both would be available at the same time? It would really suck for Apple to time the Merom release purposely right after the Nano offer ends.

Apple Expo Paris is Sept 16, which is almost certainly when we see Merom MBPs.

And no, I don't think thats a coincidence. Apple, of course, is in no way obligated to offer you an iPod discount... its just a little added incentive.

On the other hand, if you really want that iPod, a Core Duo MBP will be plenty fast for years to come.

Sadly, being a technology pundit is truly never having to say you’re sorry. You can be wrong for years and never lose your job.—The Macalope

You have to ask yourself this question:

Will the speed jump between the Yonah and Merom chips be enough to warrant giving an iPod away for the privilege?

Everybody is saying this, but what was the last thing announced at a Paris Expo? For some reason I feel like they never announce anything there. There isn't even a keynote planned.

EDIT: Also this guy is talking about MacBooks. There was never the word "Pro" in his vocabulary. Many people are assuming MBP's when the word MacBook comes out. Be careful to remember that there are also consumers here that just want the latest and greatest consumer notebook.

In 2003 Apple released new PBs and the wireless mouse and keyboard, and in 2004 we got the iMac G5. Last year the keynote was cancelled in favor of the iPod nano event a couple weeks earlier.

Yes, I am talking about the MacBook, and not MacBook Pro (curse these newfangled names! I want the iBook/PowerBook back... ). And the reason I want Merom is not because of the speed boost, but because it supposedly runs much cooler and gives longer battery life than Yonah. Oh well - if Apple Expo Paris is where we'll see it, then I guess I'll have to decide whether the brand-new chip is worth a free iPod.

Well, the PAE keynote will presumably be on the first day of the expo, so that would leave you with a four-day window to buy any new products and still be eligible for the iPod rebate.

if your waiting for merom to get reduced operating temps and a boost in battery life you might want to take a look at anandtech.com's comparison of yonah v. merom. They both operate at the same temps and the increase in battery life amounts to less than 10 minutes.

Golly, I really want a macbook, I guess I can wait. I hope it's not too long before they are bumped, I have a sneaking suspicion the next rev macbooks(and macbook pros too) will be absolutely irresistible.

Anandtech's analysis makes no reference to temps. Just performance and battery life.

opps, my bad. I must have read that somewhere else. Let me see if I can find the article.

Edit:
It looks like I was just talking on the operating temperature difference. Tech sites have mentioned that the merom processor is SUPPOSED to run cooler although I couldn't find any hard numbers.

Well, ideally, for me, the next rev to the macbook line involves either making the black color an option for all the models, or making the black model a 12" powerbook replacement by giving it dedicated graphics and perhaps more RAM standard, and perhaps an option for a slightly faster processor(so that it can be on par with its aluminum cousins)

But, everyone here is talking about the macbooks moving to the core 2 duo processor which is a little faster, a little cooler and a little bit more energy efficient, which is a good general improvement all around for any laptop.

If that happens, I will wet myself. And then buy a BlackBook. (Even though I kinda prefer the white...)

Now I remember where I saw the operating temperature mentioned. The wiki entry for merom states that yonah and merom have "the same thermal envelope". What ever the hell that means.

I am still waiting for the glossy screen to become an option.
