This should also mean C2D iMac's and MBPs. I would find it hard to believe that Apple would update the Mini and leave the other two hanging. Woot!

Skeptical.
Intel's current offerings don't make nearly as much sense for the Mac mini as waiting for the E4300, due in January, does. Core 2 iMacs and MBP's, IMO, are a lock for Paris Expo. (Sept. 16) With Core 2 MacBooks coming on a random Tuesday in November. Sadly, being a technology pundit is truly never having to say you’re sorry. Either that or they are just switching the mini's to 1.83s and 2.0 (in line with Macbooks) and then bumping Macbook Pro to C2D.

As PB PM describes, the Mac mini could be updated without moving to the Core 2. Heck, they could just bump them to 1.67/1.83 Core Duos and call it a day. (I hope they'd do a bit more than such a small upgrade, though - perhaps adding more RAM, or dropping the price...) cue the lights and dim the stars |

I want apple to make 1GB RAM standard in every Mac. The mini takes 80MB of system RAM for graphics, and when you only have 512MB of RAM...

So you want Apple to bump the price up another $100 a unit then?

I really want them to drop the price $100. Right now it looks like I'm going to have to buy the Solo, and upgrade it to a duo later.....
And I know they could drop the price on the Solo, It isn't listed on Intel's site, so it is probably a Duo underclocked with 1 core disabled. ![]() |

Better graphics hardware would be nice...
Dare I even suggest a dedicated graphics adapter with its own VRAM? |

For what's its worth...Best Buy is showing both the Minis and the iMacs as being "Sold Out" on their website.

It may not "hold up in court", Farenheit, or match a hardcore definition of "bait and switch"...but I do think that's a bit of a sneaky, ethically shaky thing for them to be doing...I don't like that at all. Call it whatever, but you know some folks have been burned on this ("hey, this model ran really nice at the store...but I buy one and bring it home and it's spinning beachball city...".)
Either the store models have what the units ship with stock, OR everything - across the board - comes stock with 1GB. I prefer the latter...especially with iLife 07, iWork 07 and Leopard on the horizon (this stuff isn't getting any less demanding, you know). Short of either of those, then Apple should implement a little in-store campaign (posters, a handout 1-2 page mini-brochure, designed all nice and cool, salesperson spiels) about the benefits of RAM and the impact it has on your Mac-using experience. BUT Apple would actually have to sell the stuff in their stores at a reasonable, sane price to make it feasible. Don't beat people over the head with "why additional RAM is important" flyers and salesperson come-ons, then turn around and charge them $189 for 64MB (plus $35 or more for "installation"). ![]() Last edited by pscates2.0 : 2006-08-25 at 09:59. |

In my opinion, Mini goes to 1.83 core duo. Everything else goes to C2D |

It is damn time pro models come with 2gb ram and consume come with 1gb ram. Anything less would be uncivilized. |

Im not saying that new Macs shouldnt lead the way though with 1gig of RAM. You do see a very gradual progression usually. I am seeing less and less 256's (especially in laptops) and a few more 1024's but it hasn't been as fast as I had hoped, and AFAIK, not as fast as the price for the RAM has dropped.

Ha! Everyone was so focused on the "comming" typo, they totally overlooked "Mew".
![]() I'll bet that's a MWSF announcement (1GB RAM in everything). Makes sense. Then Steve can say 2007 is the "year of memory" (to join HD, digital video, laptops, digital hub and whatever past "year of..." proclamations he's made). ![]() |

Go into the North Michigan Avenue Store go to any laptop or iMac and click on About This Mac in the drop down. I checked two tables worth every single one had one gig. And all with signs that say 512. I will admit I've never checked a Mini, it's a machine I'm not interested in. "What's a Canadian farm boy to do?" |

I agree that putting 1GB RAM in display models isn't a "bait and switch" (they're not, like, claiming you'll get a free iPod shuffle with your phone, until you sign your life away on the contract, and then they tell you that you won't
), but I don't think it's totally honest, either.I can definitely see Apple increasing the amount of RAM in their Macs. By the end of the year, I think everything but the lowest-end Mac mini and MacBook will have 1GB of RAM standard. And by the time Leopard ships, I think every Mac will. cue the lights and dim the stars |
