Now I know this may not be a serious question for the target market of the Mac Pro, but why was there no Front Row that shipped on the Mac Pros. I was thinking that Apple could of easily built in a IR sensor on the front of the unit a-la Mac mini. Then I figured that it wouldn't work because these systems will most likely be going under peoples desks or out of sight which would render the remote useless since many people point at the screen when using a remote control. So now I'm thinking that Apple will probably build the IR sensor into their next revision of the Cinema Displays along with the iSight of course.
What do you all think, or is the Mac Pro just that beast of a work horse and not meant for same market as the iProducts, but then there is the Mac Book Pro. ![]() Last edited by Miko : 2006-09-03 at 17:34. |

I can see both perspectives. The logistics of including it were insurmountable without switching to a Bluetooth based remote, but I'd rather Apple not second guess my reasons behind buying the machine in the first place.
Then again, I'd not buy a desktop anyway: I consider lying in bed with my MacBook Pro gently warming my lap through the covers to be one of the finer things in life. ![]() |

If it makes me sterile I plan on taking legal action against Apple. Their hardware is so overpriced that I couldn't afford an electric blanket after buying, yet so desirable that I couldn't afford not to.

I'm really miffed that Apple neglected to make the Mac Pro not front row compatible, yes it is a work computer but there are times when I use it as a second TV someone is using the home theater etc... Also if I'm using iMovie to make videos on the Pro wouldn't I want the connivence of watching them on the pro?... A huge mistake IMO, and the remote should be bluetooth for all of the mac line, why would they waste the time to build IR into the units that is only used for the remote....

It's beyond stupid that Apple doesn't include Front Row on everything nowadays. Especially the higher end systems. Yeah, whatever, IR blah. Spend the extra 2 dollars and put the bastard in. Nevermind that AP Extreme and Bluetooth are optional. Fuckers. It's shit like this that Apple constantly pulls that really grind my gears.
*wanders off to anger issues thread* So it goes. |

I think it's more that the Mac Pro, which usually sits under a desk, isn't exactly the best place to put an IR reciever. Hopefully, we'll eventually see Cinema Displays with the reciever built-in. In the meantime, Apple already makes an extrenal IR reciver in the form of the Universal iPod Dock. But does that come with Front Row? And can you control your computer through it? I honestly don't know, that's why I'm asking...
The lack of AirPort and Bluetooth is unforgivable, though. Never mind that "the professionals who use the Mac Pro use ethernet 'cause it's faster." Lots of people who use the Mac Pro use Wi-Fi because it's fast enough. If you honestly think the only people who are going to buy the Mac Pro are sound engineers and professional video editors, you're sadly mistaken, as some of the people on this very board who have purchased one have proved. Don't echo Apple's bull about how "professionals don't use Wi-Fi." It was a cost-cutting measure. End of story. cue the lights and dim the stars |

Maybe they will start offering a bluetooth remote and Front Row for the Mac Pro. Buy the remote and it comes with a dock to charge it and any Mac Pro user can go to the Apple website and download Front Row if they want it. That is the perfect remedy IMHO, but who knows what they will do!

No Front Row on the Mac Pro though; therefore, that doesn't fully solve my problem. Thanks though!

Front row does not require any hardware. If you search there is a hack to get it working on any PPC Computer running OS X.You can use your keyboard, or there are even some remotes that work with it.

He was not saying that. He was saying as far as Apple is concerned, it is dependent on hardware. No IR receiver means no front row. Otherwise the Mac Pro would include Front Row and it would just be driven/accessibly via the keyboard.
