Hi all,

How would one make changes to their library and have it save the changes?

Here's what I'm doing:

I finally got a 500GB FW External drive. I'm going to use this as my 'Music Server'. I have about 180GB of songs so instead of having a copy on each of my machines, I'm going to connect this External Drive to my iMac and share it through my network.

So what I want to know is this. If I spend the time and make sure every song has album art, is named correctly, has the right Genre assigned to it etc...So once I'm done getting everything to my liking on my iMac, then go and import the library (from the external via the iMac) into my MacBook, PC's whatever all that info will be retained.

I guess what I need to know is if there's a way to make changes in iTunes and have it effect the actual files, the source files.

Hope this makes sense.

Thanks guys.

Yes, you can make changes to files names and such. In iTunes you can goto Pref -> Advanced -> General

Change the location to your 500GB drive. Set iTunes to keep files organized. Then you can go under Advanced in the contextual menu and select "Consolidate Library." This will move all files to the location you set in Prefs, your 500GB external.

While I don't think cover art and such will automatically migrate to the MB, unless you open iTunes holding "option" and choose the library you set on your iMac. This might cause a conflict, I don't know since I've never tried it. I don't think PC's read the same though. It will be able to access the audio files, but I'm not sure if it will see the other parts, like play count, art, etc...
