I just pulled my MacBook out of my bag to do some work before my next class, and when I plugged it in, I noticed something strange. The battery charge meter showed no battery. When I clicked the pull-down menu, it said "No battery available."

I checked immediately and the battery was plugged in and had about 25% charge. I unplugged the MagSafe connector, and it immediately switched to battery power and started calculating the time remaining. I plugged the MagSafe back in, and it works fine now. Should I be worried?

Mine did that the other day too. Same exact situation. I figured it was not a problem though because when I unplugged it, it showed battery just like yours did.

Anybody have an idea of what caused this or if this should be a cause for concern?

No idea what causes it, but I've had the same behavior on my MacBook.

When you say Unplugged, do you mean unplug the Magsafe Power cord from the wall, or the connector from the computer? I suppose it couldn't hurt to experiment.

edit - tried both. Neither changed the situation.

I also had the same problem and I needed to get a new battery.

No hassles, they tested the battery at the store, took the battery and sent me a new one.

You could always try calling AppleCare directly. 1-800-APL-CARE.

Best case scenario - you can convince them over the phone that you need a new battery, and they send you one. Worst case scenario - you send them the whole machine and everything gets done by DHL, instead of you having to drive 2.5 hrs.

I have the same issue. Battery no good. I ran through the list of things to try, and nothing helped. I also took my battery out and inserted into a friend's Macbook. His Macbook also didn't recognize the battery as being connected. When I called Applecare (from work) and explained everything I had tried (including trying it in a friend's Macbook), she told me that it wasn't good enough and she wanted to run through the same list of things to try again. Huh? So, after explaining that I didn't have my computer with me (as I am forced to use a PC at work), she told me that she couldn't help me and that I would have to call back when I was at my computer. So, I think instead I shall just take a ride to my local Apple store after work tomorrow.

I'm now having this problem. My battery won't charge and resetting the SMU doesn't work. What happened with your computer, bostongeek?
