The Quad is not tutning on, the power button is flashing and there is some beeping inside of it. I turned it off for five minutes and try turning it on but still no good. Tried plugging power cord into another source. Same issue.
Applecare not open yet but wondering there is something else I can try. Thoughts? |

It was the power supply. Took it to the Genuis Bar tonight. While the guy left it plugged in and went in the back, is exploded, so I suspect now I will need a new motherboard also. . . .

I'd be more willing to bet that it's a blown capacitor or similar component within the power supply unit...not an actual, full-blown explosion, like one of those defective batteries or something like that.

It flashed and popped very loudly like a gunshot, and then there was smoke in the back.
Seriously, I am a little pissed as I said to the guy don't you want to unplug it now and he said now and left. I am worried the surge will cause problems with the CPUs, RAM or motherboard down the road. Supposedly they are going to replace it Motherboard. |

you should have demanded that it be replaced since it very well could have fried your cpu, ram, etc...
Crazy stuff... |

I've had a pair of power supplies (not in a Power Mac, just a regular PC) fail just like that, myself...when a capacitor blows, especially the larger ones, it tends to make a lot of noise and smoke, and the inside of the PSU will likely be covered with scorch marks, but in the case of my particular machine, the damage seemed to be limited to the PSU itself (although they seemed to have failed because something elsewhere in the machine appeared to have already been shorted out -- two consecutive replacement PSUs failed in the same manner almost immediately upon being energized).

I wouldn't fret. The GB will make it right before they send you out the door. And if you were to get home and it wasn't right, they'll fix it anyway.

I tried to get them to switch me to the intel machine but noooooo....
seriously, I got the call today from GB--everything is fixed but your RAM doesn't work. I had left in 2 1GB RAM chips in and they told me they no longer worked. I was pissed. I went in with my 2 others 1GB chips and showed them these worked. Apple did not want to replace them since they were not Apple sold. After they tested everything, they ordered my 2 new 1 GB Apple RAM chips no charge. It pays to have Apple Care. |
