Not wanting to rake it all up, but what was the big blackout? Was it that the website was down for a year, a month, a week, a day? Haven't found it anywhere (in the viva la rev-thread). There's just talk about the blackout.
And am I right that LoCash and Brad and alcimedes were among the ones to fix it? |

From what I remember, the great AI blackout lasted months. From what I understand, it took that long to wrestle control of the site from whomever owned it at that time. I could be wrong so don't take my word as law since I was just getting into Macs at the time.

AppleInsider was originally a side project by MacNN. In the very late 90s, it was given its own domain and a copy of UBB for its own set of forums. Unfortunately, no one really gave AppleInsider's little corner of the server much attention, though, because it had periodic "blackouts" where the site would be unavailable for short periods of time, sometimes for hours and sometimes for days.
After the longest blackout which lasted several months, Monish of MacNN approached Jonathan about becoming an admin and restarting AppleInsider as a forums-only community discussion site. Jon, as I recall, was only a regular member at the old AppleInsider, but he was given the responsibility of finding a new group of moderators and administrators to take control anyway. At this time, Kasper was nowhere to be seen and appeared to have given up on AppleInsider entirely. I can't speak for how LoCash (originally "M3D Jack") was brought aboard as a moderator, but I was recruited as a moderator for the Mac OS X forum because I was knowledgeable and fairly level-headed. I was later promoted to administrator status because I was the only one who could figure out how to repair the seemingly self-corrupting database issues. I then took on responsibility of cleaning up and improving the forum theme and graphics, as they were looking a bit dated. Does that help clear things up? The quality of this board depends on the quality of the posts. The only way to guarantee thoughtful, informative discussion is to write thoughtful, informative posts. AppleNova is not a real-time chat forum. You have time to compose messages and edit them before and after posting. |
