I was just thinking about workday schedules. I was wondering how many of you with '8-hour-per-day' jobs would 'prefer', given the chance, to work four ten-hour days so that you could have a three-day weekend *every* single weekend?
![]() I've always thought a two-day weekend was just 'not' long enough. I know ten-hour days would be awfully long, but perhaps with regular breaks they wouldn't be so bad. So, have any of you ever worked ten-hour days, and if so, did you like it? Were the long hours worth the three-day weekends? ![]() Those with regular 8-hr schedules, would you like to try the "10-hr day/3-day weekend" type of arrangement? Or not? Poll up soon. ![]() |

I think I for one would prefer the opposite: six-day weeks. Seven hours each Monday through Friday, and another five on Saturday.

I used to work at least ten, if not twelve hour days, five days a week plus at least three or four hours on Saturdays. I took a half hour, sometimes 45 minute lunch break on those days, and that was pretty much it.
My job? Admin. assistant for a workaholic. Now, if I had been able to get a three day weekend (and real weekend, no calls from my boss, no asking me to come in, etc.) then the 10 hours days wouldn't be too bad. But doing that five days a week is just draining. I never wanted to make dinner when I got home, in part because once I got home, cooked, and finished eating, I'd only have an hour or so before it was time to go to bed. However, my husband works a twelve hour shift, three days a week. He then has four days off. He loves it. He also works in health care, so it's a fairly normal schedule for them. Sometimes it's annoying, because he works nights, but now that I'm a student again, we actually see each other. (When I was working at the job mentioned above, we'd sometimes go two or three days without seeing each other at all, because he'd leave before I got home from work in the evening and I'd be gone by the time he got home in the morning.) |

I would be happy just to have A weekend. I work saturday and sunday. My rest days fall on monday and thursday, so I would love 2 days together!
Although what with being called in on overtime I often don't get any days off at all. My own stupid fault really, I am legally entitled to those days off so i can't complain, but the extra money from overtime always seems so attractive at the time. |

The best job I ever had was a 4/10 set-up: four days (Monday-Thursday), 10 hours a day.
I'm already awake, up, showered and there, working, so what's another two hours each day (especially if I actually kinda like the job and there are lots of cutie-pies around) if I get every Friday, Saturday and Sunday off? Sign me up! That was quite a few years ago (mid-late 90's) in San Diego. Sadly, I've not had that arrangement again since. ![]() Hell yes, I'd love to have that again! It's awesome, and a great mix of work/free time...four days of work, at slightly longer-than-usual, but a nice reward with every weekend being a "long, three day weekend" (and on those holidays that are observed on a Monday, I'd wind up with several four-day weekends a year). I made Friday my banking/oil change/haircut/grocery/laundry/housecleaning day, so I wouldn't have to spoil my Saturday and Sunday with chores and errands I didn't want to do. And all that stuff only took the first part of my Friday anyway, so I still had Friday afternoon and evening, plus the two other days. Of course, haircuts, banking and oil changes didn't factor in every single week either, so lots of Fridays I'd just wake up, clean the house (while doing a load of laundry), then run grab a few groceries and I was done with all that "unfun" chores/errand stuff by 11:00am or so and still have the rest of the day! I go see movies (lots of movies...probably my most active movie-viewing time ever, at least one a week: Friday afternoon, and maybe something else on Sunday). It was the greatest thing ever. ![]() I'm very protective of my weekends, and I don't buy into this "working 6-7 days a week" horseshit. That's not what we were put here to do...life will pass you by, doing that. I'll come in a bit early or stay late Monday through Friday, if necessary, to ensure that my Saturday and Sunday are left alone (and exist solely for my leisure, relaxation, travel and/or carousing). I get very bear-like when someone tries to mangle or disrupt my weekend. I simply won't have it. ![]() Last edited by pscates2.0 : 2007-04-27 at 18:28. |

Where's the option for unemployed?
I have no job and love it. You couldn't pay me to work 8 hour days again. I'd choose beer, but I don't drink. ![]() Louis L'Amour, “To make democracy work, we must be a notion of participants, not simply observers. 11-hour days, typically 6 days a week with the occasional 2-day (and extremely rare 3/4-day) weekend. 0830-2000 (typically 0900-1500 on Saturdays), with the odd late night. I miss the Nimitz.

I used to work 12 and 16 hour shifts when I was a Respiratory Therapist. I loved those shifts. You would only work 3 days a week while getting your 36-40 hours in quickly. I really miss that now.
I now work five 8+ hour shifts per week and it really stinks. |

I work 5 days a week, typically 11-12 hrs a day. The support desk im on is open 24/7, so i have to work every other weekend as well. this comes out to me working 4-5 days, getting a day off, working another 5-7 days, getting another day off, then working a few more days, and getting a weekend off
i would KILL to work 4 10hr shifts, but sadly, i have a manditory 45hr work week. My typical day is 14 hours. Some are 9, some are 22. Not unusual is a day around 19.
I'm self employed. Work in sports broadcasting. We coming in in the morning, set it all up at the arena or stadium, take a lunch, do the game, tear it out, go home or back to the hotel. Some shows are so big we get set days. Most are not like that. I have worked 10 games in 12 days, I have worked I think 25 to 30 days in a row without a day off. And I have two week vacations several times a year. Without notice that is, but time off is time off! Want to see what it cost me for health insurance?? Where's the options for "self-employed" and "make my own schedule" and "6 hours a day average"?

You don't have a poll option that fits my crazy schedule. I work Tuesday's from 830 to 430 and 7 to 8, Wednesday's from 1130 to 430 and 630 to 830, Thursday's from 830 to 430, Friday's from 9 to noon, an occasional Saturday morning (like tomorrow), and Sunday's from 915 to noon and 430 to 9. Working at a church is awesome!

Well I'm back in school after my co-op, but during my co-op, I typically worked 8-9 hours a day, Monday-Friday.
So, I voted beer. |

Yeah, I voted "Beer." Most days, I go in to the lab around 10-ish, and leave 6-ish. But sometimes I'm in at noon and out by 5, others I'm in at 9AM and out at 8PM. I try to average 40 (I'm hourly and don't bill for overtime)... but it's hard to keep from going over; there's a lot of work to be done. I probably average 45-50 hours. My new year's resolution was to not work unpaid overtime, but you can see how that's worked out for me...
![]() So, with respect to your original question, Windy, depending upon what I have planned, I sometimes work my 40 hours in four days. I do like it, but I am in the extraordinarily lucky position where I actually enjoy work. By Sunday, even on two day weekends, I'm typically ready to head back in. No Sunday night blues here ![]() |

Work is hell and in my field it has no real hours. We mostly work at the whim of the clients and have no well defined days or weekends. Starts early and ends whenever work is done. Lots of gaps in between work, but that's about it for free time.

Well, during this semester I'm only working 10 hours (and I hate being there so little). During the summer, I'll be working 35 hours every week, but my hours will be all over the place because I'm still taking classes for the summer (to make my senior year super easy
).Normally, it's kind of spotty as to how busy I am. We've got a huge project right now (we're replacing our college's entire Web site), so I've got more than enough to do. Maybe after July 1 when we launch the new site things will slow down a bit (after a week of frantic debugging, of course ). |

I work a regular 40 hour week, but flexible work hours, sometimes I work a couple hours on the weekend.
I couldn't do that myself, but maybe a 9/80 arrangement (9 hr days, first Friday 8 hrs second Friday off) wouldn't be so bad. |

Most weeks I have Sunday, Monday, Tuesday off. I do 8 hours on Wednesday and Thursday, and 12 on Friday and Saturday. I love 3 -day weekends. During festival times I'll do 14-16 hours a day, 6 days a week. (There will be something on on the 7th day too, but I put a deputy in for it.)

Typically 9am - 7pm most days (10 hours), 5 days a week, and 1 weekend day a month (average).
Before I take the train to work at 8:36, I get the kids up, make coffee, feed them, dress them, shower, get dressed, and take them to school. That's part of my workday too! (My wife leaves the house at 6:30/7:00am.) I could get out of here at 6pm every night if I pushed it, but I screw around a bit at work to keep my sanity. What about you, Windswept? What are your hours like? (Or did I miss it? ) |

I think the 10/4 schedule would be *WAY* preferable to 8/5.
Two-day weekends do 'not' provide enough time to get necessary chores done 'and' have plenty of time to relax, imo. My brother has 3-day weekends, with Mondays off; and he's able to get errands done on Mondays at places that are closed on the weekends. 10/3 seems a more humane schedule. |

Yeah, like Pscates and Windswept, 10/4 schedule makes keeping appointments much more easier.
Just imagine if everyone worked at exactly same hours. How the hell would you manage an appointment with doctor without having to calling out from the work?!? Despite what others may say, I don't think this is a good reason to call in sick, even with advance notice. If I ran a company, I'd prefer that my employees have 10/4 schedules and were staggered so we'd have a normal operating hours if necessary but can sleep better knowing my employees can do whatever chores they need to get done within other business' normal hours. Does anyone else take seriously arguments for 20 hours a week? |

I had a job doing the 10/4 thing, and it was awesome. I just stretched an 8 hour day into 10 hours so it was like getting a free extra day off for nothing.
![]() Right now I do 5 days x 8-10 hours with the odd few hours on the weekends. I'll probably be starting a new job in 2-3 months though that's 15 days on, 6 off, anywhere from 8-12 hours a day. (usually 8-10) That'll take some getting used to, but the 6 days off will be nice. |
