So apparently FedEx only knows about windows and have never heard of Mac OSX. After an hour on the phone with them, they can't seem to locate a driver for the label printer they sent me that will work on a mac. It's an LP 2844. Anyone found one or had the same issue?

Thanks for your help. I had found both of those but can't seem to get it to work. I downloaded the cups software like it instructed, restarted, and ran printer setup utility. It shows the LP 2844 in the list of printers but I can't select it and it just spins and says it's looking for new drivers. I even repaired permissions and restarted but still ran into the same issue. Any other ideas?

Not really. I do remember having a similar problem once with an Epson USB printer - it apparently didn't like being moved back and forth between PC and Mac. The solution in that case was to do an undocumented hard reset on the printer before connecting to the Mac. This probably isn't your problem, but might be worth investigating.
