Several years ago I saved up and bought my Dad a Panasonic Personal Video Recorder.... it has an internal Hard Drive and a DVD burner/player. It doesn't require that you be hooked up to a service like TiVO (he doesn't have cable and doesn't want it) and it has a television tuner built into it. He can record programs to the hard drive and save them to DVD later, or record straight to DVD in real-time.

So I got to wondering what the current state-of-the-art was with those players today and started looking online, only to discover that there isn't any sort of creature available here in the US of A.... at least not that I can find.

Did I miss a minor revolution?
Wha Hoppen??

What do I get him when his current recorder dies?
Holp.

It's like this market went entirely UK.

I hear ya man, I currently pay $10/mo (soon to be $13/mo) for HD-DVR capabilities in my cable box. I'd happily spend the ducats for a standalone DVR if I didn't have to pony up a monthly fee for a TV schedule.

Don't know, but if you find it let me know. I don't want to have to pay monthly Tivo fees unless I have to.

Well, I'm using EyeTV on my iMac with my TV tuner and I can schedule recordings (and it's free!).

I'm telling you, the Panasonic box that I have works GREAT!

It's like the cable companies have leaned on the retailers to stop them from selling these devices. Just do a search for:

HDD/DVD Panasonic Sony

and see what comes up in your search engine. These devices were sold here only a couple of years ago and now there's not one to be found. Is it such a specialty market?

Who the hell wouldn't want to own their own PORTABLE non-proprietary hard-drive based entertainment center unit? Not everyone has the ability/desire to have a PC hooked up to their AV gear.

I'm wondering if I could buy it from Canada.... hrmmmm.....

Okay,
Check this out.

SonyStyle in CANADA is selling a couple of models with the HDD option:

http://www.sonystyle.ca/commerce/ser...ductId=1003196

They're Region 1 so I'm thinking that they're "safe".... is there anything that anyone else can spot that would negate the usability of this device in the States?

One more thing.

I just called Sony's USA phone line and have spoken with an operator who confirmed with a tech specialist that the model available from Canada will work in the USA.

The operator said that she had no firm information but believed that the U.S. store would soon be offering a newer product in this same line, which is interesting and odd at the same time since they're currently offering NO such product.

As I have no immediate need for this device I think I'll wait a little while and see if the HXD870 puts in a showing in a North American guise since it has received pretty good reviews.

What a strangely broken market market sector.

Walmart

There are TONS of them out there. 1080p, HDMI, hard drive, dvd/vcr combo, analog tuner, digital tuner, etc.

Look for "DVD Recorder"
