Unfortunately, communication to the Airport Express for AirTunes is encrypted. So, third parties would first have to break the encryption key before writing any usable software. Then, if Apple ever changed that key in a future update, that software would be SOL until developers could break the new key.
I think it's very unlikely a third party will be stepping up to this challenge. It'll have to come from Apple or no one unless Apple releases an API for AirTunes (also unlikely). The quality of this board depends on the quality of the posts. The only way to guarantee thoughtful, informative discussion is to write thoughtful, informative posts. AppleNova is not a real-time chat forum. You have time to compose messages and edit them before and after posting. |

DVD Jon cracked AirTunes a while ago, and you can download his open source program to stream AAC and ALE files to your AirPort express box. The biggest obstacle to a third party developer is the very high latency of AirTunes - the visual feedback would need to be delayed to match the audio feedback or just run out of sync. This would be ugly for anything except playing music or possibly DVDs. The sky was deep black; Jesus still loved me. I started down the alley, wailing in a ragged bass. |

I'm guessing any AirTunes audio would have to be converted on the fly to an AAC or ALE file (the wording doesn't make it clear which), presumably because that's all AirPort Express is capable of decoding.
