So after many years, it seems that our Indigo iMac G3 slot-loader has given up the ghost. It won't power up at all, no lights or anything.
This isn't really all that traumatic - it had a good life. The problem is, one of my son's favorite OS 9 game CDs is stuck in the drive. Manual eject on this model requires power, as I understand it. Any thoughts on how to get the CD out without damaging it? We do know that the PRAM battery is probably dead (wasn't keeping date and time recently). Would it be worth trying a new battery and resetting PMU? |

The battery should be dirt cheap if you can find out what type it is. A dead PMU battery would = no boot.

I guess I'll drop by Radio Shack tomorrow and see if I can match the battery. Looking at the eBay listings, it seems like it should be pretty common. Worth a try before I really start tearing it apart, I guess.
Those slot-loading drives are such a pain in the ass. No mechanical eject is downright stupid. Believe it or not, this machine still gets used on a daily basis. My kids have OS 9 games that won't run under Classic and require 16 MB of VRAM, which rules out the various and sundry G3 laptops I have lying around. I do have a PowerMac G4 which would suffice, but that's my file and print server and I want it up and running OS X! ![]() |

Hi Uncle - I've just found this article. Looks like they do have a manual eject after all.

Sorry, apparently that needs power too.

It's dead. Bought a new PRAM battery ($17 at Radio Shack
) and that made no difference. So I opened it up, took out the drives and RAM, and was able to extract the CD. Now the iMac is destined for the trash (or a second life as a fish tank). I don't like empty electrical sockets, network jacks, or desk space. So I picked up a PowerMac G3 B&W 300 for $18 (plus shipping) on eBay. They're practically giving those things away. I think it should handle the OS 9 games just fine. But wait, now I need a monitor! Hmm, the 17" LCD I'm using on the family PowerMac G5 is showing it's age. Might have to buy a new widescreen - then I can swap the 17" to the B&W! Funny how this stuff works - you can really get carried away. I should know better by now. ![]() |

Sorry for the news, but it sounds like it'll work out pretty god in your favor anyway.
