My iPhone is really starting to piss me off.

Sure, it's awesome for checking mail, surfing the web, all that crap. But the damn phone doesn't work for me!

I can't tell you how many calls I've missed because the stupid thing just doesn't ring. For some reason it randomly just goes right to voicemail. It doesn't even give me that big message across the screen that says "You missed a call" and "New voicemail" when that happens. Sometimes it doesn't even go to voicemail. For the caller, it just rings and rings and rings, but I don't hear a damn thing (and no it's not on vibrate).

Am I alone in my agony? Is my iphone just bugged?

Sounds like a bad phone to me. My wife has no issues with hers at all. Sure she misses calls when the signal is low, but never when there is a signal.

I'd check your reception, and remember that if it's pretty weak when it's out of your pocket, it can get worse when you tuck it away. Beyond that, I don't know what the issue would be. Mine works great.

I've had the occasional no-ring phone call too. However, I had it with my last 3 phones as well, because they were all on AT&T/Cingular. That's the problem, I bet. Sucks sometimes.

Mine has been fine, but I've been living in relatively large metropolis areas so my signal has always been good.

You're not alone! I too have experienced what you described. I've tried restoring mine, and that seemed to help for a short time and then it was up to its old tricks again.

I haven't run into this issue, but I did learn the hard way that I won't get phone calls or VM notifications while using the EDGE data connection.

AT&T just sucks in some parts of the country. I'd say your problems are a network issue, not a phone issue. You could try to get a replacement under the warranty just to double-check, but I'd say it's AT&T's fault, since those are typical issues in wonky sections of a cellular network.

Every carrier has bad pockets in its network. You may just be one of the unlucky ones in a bad pocket in AT&T's network.

I wrote about this very thing over in Genius Bar (tacked it on to my "Wi-Fi not working on iPhone" thread).

I'll just be going about my business and then I'll hear the "new voicemail/missed call" alert. I'll look and, sure enough, someone called a few minutes earlier, and I never heard it ring.

Hasn't happened a ton of times, but enough to where it's been mildly annoying. I just figured it was more of an AT&T/reception thing than the phone itself. But I really don't know. Sometimes, I've noticed, I don't even get the new voicemail/missed call alert, and I won't know I have a message until I go to check e-mail or make a call, and I'll see the notice there on the home screen in that dark blue box.

That's a bit aggravating because I've missed a handful of important calls because of it. I just usually make it a point to check the phone every half hour or so, just in case. Usually there's nothing, and the above hasn't happened enough to where it's a constant, every day thing (I'd be really upset if that was the case). Maybe once every few weeks or so. Maybe when it happens, I'm in a building or part of town where things don't get through easily?

I have this, but not on my iPhone. I have a work mobile (Nokia 3310ish on Vodaphone) and sometimes i will get answer-phone messages when the phone hasn't rung or sometimes it will take a three days for it to inform me of a new answer-phone message.

I generally put it down to the connection to networks. I reckon the phone just looses sign for a split second just as a call is coming through. Or it could be that the network is at its capacity therefore i cannot actually connect the call therefore diverts it to the answer-phone.

If restoring your iPhone doesn't sort it, then it is either a hardware problem, which sound unlikely if it is intermittent with no reproducible causes or network related or there is a bug in the software but it think more people would find this problem.

Do you have it set to check e-mail automatically? When I'm on edge and have it set to check e-mail I miss calls, just like you described. When I set it to check manually, I never miss a call.

Like BassPlayinMacFiend said, the phone disables when it's accessing edge.

A lot of the early iPhones reportedly had problems with bad SIM cards and/or the antenna would come loose and reception would either be diminished or be lost completely.

I had no reception/signal problems with my iPhone for the first nine months, and now either my SIM card is fried, the antenna is loose, or the carrier is having an extended network problem, as I've had "No Service" for almost three days now except for a couple of 2-minute periods yesterday and today in which voicemails downloaded to my iPhone. (And no, my account hasn't been suspended for lack of payment.)

I'm not in the U.S. right now, and won't be for several months, so I'm not real excited about the possible support/exchange/new SIM scenarios.

This has happened to me, too. But it's also happened on every mobile phone I've ever owned.

It's happened on every Blackberry, Treo's running the Palm OS, and Treo running the MS OS I've ever used. The iPhone actually has a better track record than any of the others. While "smart phones" are the worst, I've had the problem with all phones I've owned.

I don't really think cell phones are all that ready for prime time, but you can't beat their convenience.
