when viewing the site through IE on Windows, the applenova icon has a graphite background.

But when using Firefox on the same PC, its transparent to the right background. Same on Safari.

Just thought I'd point it out if it hasn't been mentioned before.

It's because the "applenova" image is a PNG with an alpha channel. While IE for Windows has supported the PNG format for a while, it has never supported transparencies in PNGs. Since we are primarily a Macintosh based site, we opted to not remedy the issue because the majority of our users would be Mac based.

Hey, you know what would be funny.... Doing some evil ActiveX stuff to punish users who are using IE. That would crack me up... Use Firefox if you've got to use a PC.

Bwa hahaha! Bloody genius.

But, yeah, Internet Explorer blows. Use Firefox on your PC. Get rid of all your IE shortcuts. Do the same on your family members' and coworkers' PCs. It'll make life much better for you, them, and all of us web developers.

Seriously. You have no idea how much of a godsend Firefox is for developers. Finally there's a good, standards-compliant alternative to IE that can be used by the general public and Joe Sixpack. And, thank Vishnu, it's actually picking up real market points.

By the way, has anyone seen if that "works" on WinIE? I seem to recall "transparency" in PNGs displays as 50% gray.

johnq,
Sorry man - I still see all the text on a Windows box in both IE and FireFox.

I'm not sure what look you were going for johnq. Right now it looks like there's a light grey box around that darker gray "windows sucks" image. If you wanted to hide the "windows sucks" part, you'd need it to be about half as gray. HTH.

Right, I just wanted to use the same gray that WindowsIE uses when it can't deal with a PNG's transparency. I was going for totally solid gray box in WinIE but the message is visible for other browsers that support PNG properly.

Thankfully/unfortunately, I don't have a PC to test on

Oh. My post was while I was using IE6 on a PC. So it doesn't seem to be right.

Ok so I replaced the file, using a new grey:

I'm assuming the Jpeg you posted altered the actual gray involved. So I guessed a reasonable 225 for r,g and b.

Probably hard to read on this site's background.

Useless but I'm stubborn.

I think it would be better if that image only showed up on IE. Make the image transparent so it shows up when the browser doesn't properly render alpha channels. That way THEY get the message and the rest of us can surf without seeing it.

Not for me... when I view this page in WinIE, the logo appears to be light gray (perhaps the same shade as the background color) with a white box. Maybe it messes up the transparency and reverses it or something.
