I've just read that they discovered a variant of the previous Trojan found in iWork torrents. This one is within CS4 torrents. I know that it's on illegal sites and you have to give your password to install it but sill... I wouldn't say I'm worried but I don't like that.
But on the other hand, both of the trojan have been found by the same company, Intego. Don't know what to think about this. I'm a Mac user for 3 years now and I can count the virus/trojan I've heard on my hand. Do you guys this is a new trend and we'll see more virus or is just a phase and we won't see any new for X times. Maybe you guys already talked about that a billion that too... I think it's a brilliant way for people to get trojans into the OS X environment.
On the other hand, I think it speaks for OS X's security when the best way to get a trojan on someones system is to trick them by hiding it in a pirated copy of software and giving it administrator rights during install. I guess this is something that will be out there from now on. Even if it was just a ploy by the virus company, it has given others inspiration on how to deploy things in the future. It's easy to stay out of it though. Just buy your software legally. |

I can count the number of viruses on no hands.
![]() Trojans, on the other hand, are unsurprising and have been easily possible since the very first version of Mac OS X on day one. Trojans are merely a product of social engineering and are not an indication of the technical security of an operating system. The only reason we haven't seen more trojans (really) is because users tend to be a bit more intelligent/careful. There's also that whole broken windows theory. Viruses and exploits? Those need technical vulnerabilities. Trojans? All they need is a stupid/gullible user. The quality of this board depends on the quality of the posts. So if I'm not a cheapskate I'm fine?
My only fear is that this will prompt my school's IT department to require Mac users to install Symantec. Right now Cisco Clean Access is required to log into the network. On Windows, it won't let users connect without Symantec installed and I know they've been considering the same requirement of Mac users. |

That Daring Fireball piece was great. I sent it to about six people who desperately need to read it because they're forever pulling their hair out about this stuff (and acting totally perplexed - or even a bit irritated - that I never seem to be suffering with them).
"Oh, so Macs are just perfect, huh? Is that it? All you Mac users are just so smart?" No, but... ![]() Maybe the article will clear a few things up for them. I've tried to explain things along those lines, but maybe hearing it from someone else will "click" with them a bit more. ![]() |
