I still can't figure out how to make that statement correct. Even if they meant "browser," they'd still be comparing a product to two companies. And even if we substituted "IE" and "Safari" for "Microsoft" and "Apple" they'd still be incorrect, because Firefox is the second most popular browser (ahead of Safari).

Bonus lawl: According to one Gizmodo commentator, the commentator also provided this gem of a quote:

Quote:

Yes, FBN blowhard. Yes they do.

(The quote is unconfirmed, as I can't find the clip on YouTube...but somehow I can believe it.)

Maybe, by this time next year, Bing will have overtaken Wii for the most popular MP3 player.

Probably because Fox News is broken and needs to be fixed up.

Someone will need to sit down and slowly and clearly explain to Rupert Murdoch in very very simple English that Fox News is basically borked and it's his own fault.

This isn't even Fox News, though. It's Fox Business. They're telling people how to invest their money.

Scary thought.

Well, it's still owned by Rupert, and it's just a symptom of much more bigger, widespread and malevolent disease infecting the whole corporation, not just Fox Business.

If the News corporation were* a computer, the hard drive would have to be reformatted, its motherboard completely replaced, get new RAM as well replacing the various component including keyboard and mice. The only thing that'd be functional would be the chassis (and it's of dubious value even).

Since cable news channels hire people based mainly on looks this isn't very surprising. It happens all the time and isn't relegated to Fox.

Well, Fox hires based on looks and your ability to bring the crazy without flinching, so they actually are worse.

Indeed. CNN for instance has its own fail talent:

No, they employ regular folk.

Yes, but aren't news channels also supposed to hire fact checkers? I guess I can understand hiring your talking heads based on looks (and, hopefully, communication skills) but in those cases they're not the ones actually researching the cases, they just report them. I don't expect Steve Doocy (or Brown Haired Guy Who is Not Steve Doocy) to actually be an expert on business himself, but the people writing, researching and fact-checking their business stories should be. Somebody should have caught that.

And the geeky parts of the internet had just as much fun with CNN's "the space shuttle goes faster than light!" thing, so it's not like we're picking exclusively on Fox here. (Believe me, if I wrote a thread to air all my grievances with Fox, it'd be much, much different.)

Average people don't make a distinction between the speed of light and the speed of sound? I can understand average people being vague on the particulars, but man.

OTOH, I was just listening to an old time radio scifi podcast from the 40s where the writers were using "universe" interchangeably with "galaxy", so maybe we're not actually getting dumber.

Average people may not know that there is a distinction between the speed of light and the speed of sound.

A disquieting thought. I guess I don't hang out with many average people, or perhaps I do and certain topics just don't come up.

I have noticed that even among some perfectly bright, educated folk there is an amazing lack of conceptual info regarding the structures of the universe, or even our immediate solar system. Like, moon, sun, mars out there somewhere and then just big. Actually, not much understanding of any fundamental science in general, for that matter.

So, yeah. I guess you're right, now that I think about it.

I've heard of lots of people (authors, for example) getting "galaxy" and "solar system" confused, so...yeah.

Personally, I have no idea how people can't know the difference, but I bet if I asked my mom she wouldn't.

But she's a Young Earth Creationist...does she count?

Oh come on. That can't possibly be true.

That sounds like something a mom would make up to keep their kids from running too fast.

"If you keep running that fast you're going to create a wormhole! God help you because I'll never be able to get you back! Remember how much you like my blueberry pie, because you'll never taste it again!!!"

*sigh*

I wish my mom would've said that.

So it goes.

Right, and not a clue about scale. Is a solar system bigger than a galaxy? Is Pluto as far away as another star? You'd think with the popular Hubbell deep field shots or those of some of the more impressive galaxies would have focused people's attention, but apparently not.

I guess maybe after grade school science it just never comes up again, if you don't happen to be among people who are interested in such things?

When I was in high school I dated a stripper who asked if a microwave is similar to how a star burns...she then ordered a virgin cappuccino. She was hot and all was forgiven.

I bring this up because Rupert Murdoch is a genius.

Not to spoil the fun, but I'm pretty sure I remember reading that that question was photoshopped, TBH.

I mean, does "the largest" sound like the type of unambiguous wording a trivia show would use?

The photoshopee probably just picked an unfortunate-looking contestant and made her look stupid(er).

YouTube doesn't seem to actually contain the clip...
