I found a magazine and came across this. Kind of Nostalgic.

Ha...so render-y, those older product shots. And the older Apple Garamond type as well, which I've almost forgotten about after years of this sans serif look!

My all-time favorite:

Gorgeous (lickable!) colors, neat pose/lineup, etc. Just screams "gimme one!"

That's mine on the left! Still sitting in my bedroom closet, as we speak, lovingly wrapped in a thick, soft towel.

They also ran a TV commercial based on this look, where the thing gradually spun around to reveal all the models, and the final shot of the TV spot was this image. It was one of those that Jeff Goldblum did the voiceover for, and the tagline was something about a cruise line, and "departing now" (the Internet?).

EDIT: Ah...I loves YouTube!

From the commercial's last frame:

I never noticed, until just now, the different lineup. The print ad above puts the blueberry model front and center, but the TV ad focuses on the grape model, and it winds up at the center (and the other flavors are all over the place too). But it's still kinda neat to see that Apple was already rocking the "glossy reflection" thing, way back in 1999...

It's funny, because I was just going through some of my old HDs looking for a small one I could erase and ship off, and I found one with a backup of OS9 machines I had way back in '99. Contained therein is a shitpile of old Apple ads and QT VRs. The iMac one you mention above (plus another one with the Tangerine/iMovie and a Graphite "leather seats not included" one), AirPort UFO, Titanium G4 PowerBook, etc. Some of the "long-form" stuff as well, like the first iPod promo with Schiller and Ive (maybe even Rubenstein, I think) gabbing it up with Moby, Seal, Smashmouth guy....it was all just too funny.

[edit]: OMG. This was in one of the old HD folders dated Jan 09, 2001:

So it goes.

Man, I'm glad Apple stopped putting "i" in front of absolutely everything.

Am I the only one who noticed that, in surjones's TiBook ad, "www.apple.com" and "Think Different" aren't in Apple's corporate typeface (Apple Garamond, at the time)? It's not condensed enough. And Apple never capitalized the "D" in "Different," and always included a period at the end.

I call shenanigans.

No, but I couldn't be bothered at the time to call him on it. I was feeling charitable.

The Magazine is The Spook magazine from Sept. 2001. Why would someone tinker with an mag ad?

Most of my Apple stuff is on other hard disks, but here's one that already feels like it's from a different era:

Pscates never liked it, but I thought it was great. Sniff.

I didn't hate it. I just didn't see the point, really. Tons of third-party things out there already. Plus it was expensive as hell!

Just struck me as a bit "why?", that's all. The ultimate limited-appeal, niche product.

Seriously...who did they think would be buying this in any large, meaningful numbers?

I had one, then sold it on eBay.

Though expensive, it sounded great (for my non-audiophile ears) and could get really, really loud. It also weighed like a stack of textbooks. Did I mention that it was pretty expensive?
