I posted a few days ago about some issues with my iMac G5 20" iSight, OS 10.4.11...still having same problems, but I was able to Target Firewire and backup the rest of my HD thru my Powerbook G4 15", OS 10.5.8, YEA! I turned the DVD/CD Sharing on my PB, but I don't know how to turn that option on remotely on my iMac to try reinstall the OS. It still won't boot up on it's own (blue flashing ? folder icon). Is there a way I can reinstall the OS over Target Firewire? My iMac has always had trouble booting up from the LaCie FW CD/DVD drive, even after updating. Another problem to fix, UGH!

Day 6 without playing WOW is killing me!!!!

Your iMac doesn't have a CD/DVD drive?

Edit:

Oh ok, I found the other post, you should probably just continued in there since it's a continuation of the same problem.

The only option I can think of, is to open up the iMac and hook another DVD drive direct to the internal port for the installation (I assume they are normal IDE/SATA ports inside?

However, after reading the state of that machine, perhaps you should just push it down the stairs and claim on the insurance (check your covered before you push it down the stairs!)

Personally, I would not be wanting to do anything on a machine that is so broken.

OK, I have given up keeping this sig up to date. Lets just say I'm the guy that installs every latest version as soon as its available!

Hi Gargoyle, sorry about the posting error, I'm a NOOB. I think I'll have to open it up. I need to solder the mic back on anyway. I'm disabled and just can't afford to buy anything. I really don't want (no offense to anyone) an Intel Mac either. That's why I got the G5 right before they quit selling them. I'm a die hard Mac fan, used to work for Apple...I even collect them! I even have one of the "UMAX clones" from back in the 90's, and it works! hehe

Anyway, I have lots of tech manuals, but I can't find out where the actual on-board RAM is. Tried the ifixit site, but no specifics where it's located. If I can just take it off, my problem will be solved....if that'll work. I'm a geek, but not THAT good of a geek.

I have a CD/DVD drive to hook up, even install, it's just not a SuperDrive. You know all the fuzzy stuff around the drive slot? Well, that got super sticky too. I tried to clean it as best as I could, but it's still a bit stiff. A Genius told me I'd have to get a whole new casing for that stupid fuzzy shit!!!!

I'll start on the take down and check back in in a little while. Maybe someone will have a RAM location by then. Thanks for the help!

Oh well, if you are collecting them, then great! But for a machine for daily use, you'll eventually have to upgrade to intel.

I lost my love for old computers that need tinkering with a long time ago. They are now just a tool to get things done and I normally upgrade every 12-24 months. I have one of the 2008 intel Mac Pro's, and that is the longest I have owned a single machine for a long time... in fact, where's nova bazaar...

Nooooooo-you can't make me do it!!! LOL

I opened my iMac up and it still had coke residue all over and lots of dust, which I'm sure didn't help. I spent hours cleaning it. I did solder the mic back on and took out the SuperDrive and cleaned it. I think the super sticky fuzzy stuff was the big problem-some residue on the opening of the drive, but none inside, yea! Soaked the fuzzy stuff enough so it's not stiff anymore. Although I have the LB take apart, I'm not going to try it. I'd rather find a way to shut down the on-board RAM thru software. I'm old school and haven't really used terminal or learned UNIX yet.

Today I'll put it back together. If anyone knows how to do this (RAM), or of a site that could help, I'd really be grateful. I spent 5 hours Googling and didn't find what I needed. UGH!
