i just got a new hard drive to replace my defect hard drive.
i have been searching on the web, but i cannot find a step by step tutorial on how to prepare the hard drive to install snow leopard on it.

What it is i need to do before installing the os, do i need to format the hdd and if so, what option do i choose in the disk utility.

You do need to format the drive. Select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) for the format. Do not select the case-sensitive one.

Clarification: don't select the case-sensitive option unless you know why you're selecting it.

Mac OS X and most apps behave just fine with a case-sensitive filesystem, and some environments require it (esoteric ones probably only developers care about), but there are some dinosaur hold-olds, namely Adobe and its software, that will fail to run on a case-sensitive filesystem.

Oh... Interesting. I was thinking of doing my next install as case-sensitive to closer match the linux server we run the live sites on, but that throws a bit of a spanner in the works.

The sooner we can switch to something like Pixelmator, the better!

OK, I have given up keeping this sig up to date. Lets just say I'm the guy that installs every latest version as soon as its available!
