My iPhone has been acting crazy lately with respect to music playback. It'll skip songs, or rather skip to the end of tracks. Randomly shuffle. Just now it skipped to the middle of a song from the middle of another song. This occurs on many different albums with various encodings but mostly AAC.

My iPhone is not jailbroken and running the latest iOS. The songs seem fine in my iTunes library and they play back normally on my computer. Any thoughts? I'd hate to have to restore the iPhone since that would take quite a long time and might just restore the problems.

Edit: that stupid shake to shuffle feature is off if you were wondering. And there's no audible beep as there would be if it were doing that or responding to an errant voice command.

Ok, so twice in the past 10 hours, this has happened. I am sitting here at my computer so I figured I'd do a little searching. Looking like the cueing to the end of a track is a pretty common problem in 4.2.1. Now, the really interesting thing is that this problem happens to me only (?) on track 3 of albums played as albums. The encoding does not seem to matter. It's happened with 2 ALC albums, an Apple purchased AAC+ album and an MP3 160 VBR encoded album. So weird. And annoying.

Remove all music and re-sync? That was always the easiest solution on pre-iOS devices, it'll probably work here as well.

The threads I've read on Apple's support forums indicate that the problems persist post re-syncing. I'll give it a try but I'm not sure it'll work. Interestingly, I don't think my iPad exhibits the same problem - then again, I don't listen to music that often on my iPad.

More maddening weirdness: Now it skips the 1st and 3rd tracks pretty reliably. It also has the wrong album art when shown on the lock screen. Argh! I know I should restore the iPhone and go from scratch and not restore from a backup but I don't want to lose all my game saves, etc... Any ideas at all?

The thing seems quite torqued. You may have to just bite the bullet and do the one thing you're trying to avoid. If there's some serious corruption or glitches at play, that's probably the only sure-fire fix.

I'm leaning towards this being an iTunes library problem so I'm rebuilding my library per these instructions. We'll see if that fixes it.

How weird. Those instructions only gave me a subset of my library.

Sounds like there's only one thing left to do.

PANTS OFF DANCE-OFF

Or, y'know, restore the iPhone and start from scratch. Srry :'(
