You can now buy the previously-in-beta FaceTime for Mac at the app store. No significant changes from the beta, AFAICT. UI still weird and iOS-esque.

The new MBPs supposedly include it.

I don't get why it isn't free. I mean, I'm not saying it doesn't have value, or isn't "worth" ninety-nine cents or whatever, but surely having a wide-as-possible user base would only help Apple sell FaceTime-equipped iPhones and iPods?

It needs a Windows version if they're hoping to make a dent.

My guess: they'll make it free for new Macs and for 10.7.

Didn't they promise they'd open the spec?

Here's an idea: Maybe they'll just build it into iTunes?

Genuine lol there.

99 cents times a couple of million should cover the expenses of its development. Right?

Meh, it's not that FaceTime isn't worth $0.99 or that the price would prevent me from buying it (if I owned a Mac that is)...

...but it does seem a bit weird to slap a little cover charge on what should probably be a feature built into iChat.

In a way, $0.99 is the worst possible price point. The fact that it costs money will keep a lot of people from getting it, but the low price will probably prevent Apple from really making a killing on selling it. At this point, a couple million bucks is pocket change to them. Why not just try to maximize the number of people who have FaceTime access?

Also, if it's based on open-source standards, what's stopping independent developers from making their own FaceTime software and distributing it for free to multiple platforms?

Apparently, for accounting reasons.

Well, it's not documented yet.

The second I saw this, I immediately thought that it was only for forcing people to get an account and link a credit card or something.

Maybe the Mac App Store need a little boost
