Is there any Linux user here ? More specifically of Ubuntu ?

11.04 just came out and I'm trying it right now. I tried Ubuntu a little bit before but not that much... It's pretty cool so far with the new Unity interface. I know a lot of long time GNOME user hate it... Anyway if I didn't have a Mac, I would probably use it. Give it a shot if you want to or check some review of it. It's getting closer to a consumer OS (once it's installed).

I've been using Ubuntu as a secondary OS since Sept 2008, and I've seen it grow into something I really could use full-time. In fact, as some of you may recall, I used to use a netbook as a primary machine from 2009-mid 2010, and it always ran Ubuntu. If OS X went away, it would definitely be my primary OS. I really am a fan and wish it all the best in its life as a way of migrating people off of Windows and to something more manageable. I'd definitely prefer computer-illiterate relatives to be on Ubuntu over Windows, I feel like it would be less of a hassle for me.

I'ma install the netbook remix of 11.04 when my exams are done on Wed. Someone poke me around Thur/Fri and make me post back here with impressions.

I keep trying out Ubuntu periodically in VMs. It's definitely the best bet for a user-friendly desktop Linux OS, but it's still lightyears behind Mac OS X and Windows 7 in the usability and the "hiding what's under the hood" department. It does continue to lower (slowly) the barrier to entry. Though, I'm not sure how much of that is Ubuntu's doing versus Gnome, etc.

I'll probably take 11.4 for a spine in the next few weeks. Anything major added this time? Or just the typical round of patches and updates for the various bundled softwares?

Well… Unity. (Which was previously only used on the netbook edition of Ubuntu.)

I have 10.10 installed on an old tower connected to the living room TV, for things like Hulu and the occasional YouTube video worthy of a couch.

The CPU's pathetic for full-screen, but I enjoy my interaction with Ubuntu over all. I've been wanting to update it to 11.04 and will have to do that sometime. Unity looked interesting, in one of those flashy-GUI ways that would interest me and annoy many others, so I'll have to see what it's like. (I like the way the workspaces are represented for example, 'within the borders of the UI' instead of the borders of the screen. Sort of like 10.7.)

Also throughout the years I've tried Ubuntu a couple times on a PowerBook G4, whose version goes up to only 8.x. I haven't determined whether it's my not knowing how to use Ubuntu to its fullest or if OS X is all that much better on the old computer, but I prefer 10.4 (and 10.5) over the old Ubuntu and don't currently have it installed.

I have been using Ubuntu for the past 4-5 years.
It is my primary OS for all my servers and my laptop.

I use OS X for about 60% of my home desktop needs, the remaining 40% is Ubuntu.

I love Ubuntu.

You saw that this morning, huh? I managed to crack up about 6 people on my dorm floor with that. And clearly you, so I'm glad someone appreciated it. (2 of us are planning on installing it this weekend, so uhm, I haven't actually used it yet and everything will likely go a lot more smoothly.) Also, I had never seen that XKCD panel before today, so I swear that wasn't what I was thinking of when I said that. It just sort of popped out of my mouth this morning when discussing OSes.
