Hi,
I have a 23" Cine hooked up to a 15" PB. Is it possible to have the dock and everything run on the Cinema Display @ it's full rez (1920x1200), and keep the PowerBook lcd turned off? I know I can "mirror" the displays, but the Cine will only run then at the PB's native max res: 1280x854. Even though I've got the PB on an iCurve, the work flow as is, is beginning to feel really awekward -- Being that the Cine is front and center, everytime I want to do something, I have to keep crankin' my head to the right where the PB sits. I know... if everyone should have such problems... ![]() |

You'll need an external mouse and keyboard.
Plug 'em in and close the PowerBook. Then, as soon as you press a key on the external, the display will come to life without the PowerBook's screen. This is called clamshell mode. Are there any dangers/drawbacks to this "clamshell" mode? I've heard discussions about heat and so forth. What's the straight deal?

I've heard of people running machines full time in clamshell mode without issue. I've actually never heard of a PowerBook overheating. Granted, I'm too paranoid to do that (and I actually like the added screen real estate
).By the way, if the menu bar, Dock, and other things are defaulted to your PowerBook screen when you plug in an external display, just fire up System Preferences -> Displays and you should be able to choose the primary display. I would post a screenshot, but I'm not at my PB right now. The quality of this board depends on the quality of the posts. Oh Sweet.
Do you simply power up everything and then close the screen or do you leave the PB powered off, and the wireless keyboard turns it on somehow? Echoing pscates2.0 - have you heard any probs with this? edit: Sorry, you got to this part of my question before i finished writing it. |

One More Question...
Say you're working in 'clamshell' mode, and you want to open up the notebook again, and use dual screens... should I be doing something special? Right now if I open the screen again, it stays dark, until i select 'system preferences' and click on displays, 'detect displays'. Is that what I'm supposed to do, or is there some other method that I should be using? |

Nope, that sounds about right to me.
Alternatively, you can put the system to sleep and then wake it up by using the PowerBook's built-in keyboard. That'll give you both displays back. Or you can hit the round, silvery power key (if the PowerBook is open).
Or you can press control-eject (on an external keyboard). ![]() |

This thread is very interesting and timely, in that I'll soon be sporting a 12" PowerBook and 20" Cinema. Good stuff to know...

Hmmm.
I can't check this right now because my 20" display is in the UK, while the PowerBook and I are in Stockholm. |
