Recently I cannot get my G5 1.8 DP 1.25 RAM OSX10.3.8 to maintain the 'view by list' settings in either the current finder window or all finder windows settings. Everything is fine after the initial changes are made but anytime I reboot everything returned to a garbled icon view setting. I have been a Mac addict since 1985 but this one has me befuddled. I have done what I consider complete diognostics, ie privilige repair, then from an external drive- Disk Warrior, Tech Tools, Norton and ran the disk utility repair, optomized and do permissions again. She runs like a new born champ with the exception of the icon view reoccuring after every reboot.

Any ideas apprediated.

Have you used root to login recently? Did you use icon view?

Barring that, you've run into a very old gripe with OS X and the finder. To keep the finder respecting your preferences you have to do the following:

1) Close ALL open finder windows.
2) Open a new finder window.
3) Arrange it as you like - view setting, size, positioning on screen.
4) Close that window.
repeat until you get it exactly the way you want it.

This won't fix the seemingly random way the finder will choose to display certain folders (e.g., my documents folder frequently ends up in a view I don't want it to be in), but it will work for most. HTH.

www.macosxcocktail.com
that has an option to delete all .ds store files... do that and everything should go back to the default...
you sohuld be able to set preferences as you please...
just stay away from norton and logging in as root... that will screw things up.
