At work we have 2 1TB storage systems for our video footage and projects we work on. We have never backed any of it up, cause usually it's in and out pretty quickly. But recently we have some major jobs that are taking a lot longer than we thought so we want to back up. The main question is, what is a cheap way to backup 2TB's of data? Hope this is all the info you need.

Get an AIT drive.
At work, we backup tons of data everyday using Retrospect and a couple of AIT drives. It works great. |

What one should we be looking at for this amount of data? What brand's and stuff do you use? Also do you have a price range? Thanks heaps.

For the prices that i can find on those tape drives, isn't it worth while buying a new external firewire drive and backing up to that?? What is the advantages of spending so much more money for these drives? Thanks for the help

Because it's a tape based backup.
You buy the drive then you can backup to numerous tapes and create a library that can be retrieved/updated at any time forever. If you buy an external FireWire HD, once you fill it up, in order to use it again you'll have to offload the data to other media, erase it or let it sit. Not really the best bang for your buck. If you can afford the initial investment of a AIT drive, the media is fairly cheap in the long run. If you're never going to need to retrieve the data that you're backing up, then a FireWire solution might be in your best interests. If that's the case, then check out Weibetech. I'd love to have the RT5. ![]() |

ok thanks. That's pretty much what i wanted to know. Basically it's not that important the stuff where backing up. It's video footage that we keep the beta master for anyway. So in the long run we just want something that will make life a bit easier if something goes wrong. Once the job is done the footage is stuck back on beta and DVD and archived and wiped off the comp. So i think the RT5 you mentioned might be ok. Thanks a lot for that.
