My 1ghz titanium got the logic board replaced a couple months ago, but when it got back the fan was forever on. I sent it back, they replaced the logic board, but since I've gotten it back it's been roughly the same.

Here's what I am wondering:
  1. If you have a titanium powerbook, which one do you have and are you experiencing this?
  2. If you have any other powerbook, does the fan go on often?

I've seen complaints in the apple forums for all models. When the logic board in this machine was replaced the first time, it was after it crashed due to, as they later told me, a "burned logic board." This would lead me to think that they realized there was a problem and decided to tweak the fans, but none of the reps mentioned it. It also wouldn't account for why I see some complaints with newer powerbooks.

What makes it even more noticable is that I have a g3 ibook here and the fan on that almost never comes on. I'm seriously on the verge of buying a g4 ibook as my main machine because of this, but I really like the 15" screen.

I can't even hear the fan on my powerbook, I mean, I can't tell if it's that or the processor. I have a G4 rev. d 12 incher... I think the fans are quiter on the newer ones.

Flail, the processor does not make any noise. It's a hunk of glass and plastic.

The fan on my tibook spins up pretty often, but only when the
cpu is active. It's rarely blowing when the machine is sitting idle.

Did they upgrade the os for you? Apparently, the fan-on temperature
setting has varied across os releases.

It helps to set "reduced processor speed" in the energy saver control
panel. But then your machine is running a lot slower than you paid
for.

last night mine went on and stayed on while the cpu was at 3-10 % with occassional spikes. That's basically how it is now.

So I've heard. The OS is exactly the same as it's been from the beginning since I dump everything off before sending it in and them dump it back on when I get it back. I haven't even updated it with SU since november.

Exactly.

Also, with the most recent logic board I've lost the 'automatic' option.

Yep, have the same problem here: 12" titanum powerbook. Fan comes on way too early when doing nohing but surfing internet and stays on when idle for hours at varying levels. Apple tech has ordered new logic board...? I'll let you know if that makes a difference..

ok, that's screwed up. i thought mine came on too much, but only if the cpu is running at a sustained 80% or more. (gaming)

otherwise it basically never comes on. (17" PB)

I have a PB12 .867GHz, and had never heard of this fan problem. I stayed on Jaguar (10.2.8) until last week, when I "upgraded" to Tiger. Now the fan's driving me nuts.

Wellp, logic board replaced, and no change. The techys also rendered the F2 key inoperable for good measure. The fan isn't reacting to heavy CPU use or because it's too warm. Running cool to touch, low CPU usage, but kicks in and doesn't let up..
