I know its normally apple+shift+3 ... but it's not letting me. Any ways around this?

Please don't leave us hanging on the title. It's possible to enter a very long title so there's no reason not to mention DVD player in it.
Anyway, to answer your question, you can use an app called DVD Capture, available here. It's not the most intuitive, but you should be able to figure it out pretty easily. Also I think this belongs in Genius Bar. |

The reason it is disabled in the system is copy write laws if i remember right.
