Hello, I've turned the old G3 tower into a server and would like to update it with a gigabit ethernet card. I'm looking specifically at the Linksys PCI card. Any reason why this wont work? Anyone else have a better solution?
Thanks.

Most cards need drivers to operate. It is not always a "It just works" scenario.

This is the one I'm looking at: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...MP=KNC-INKTOMI
Linksys does not provide a driver for the mac, windows only.

This brings up a good question. . .

OSX is built on Darwin (where the ethernet driver is found) and Darwin is kinda based off FreeBSD. So would the cards supported by FreeBSD be supported by Darwin/OSX???

I could see this going either way, either Darwin takes after FreeBSD and its drivers (which are easy to port), or because Darwin uses a different kernel the drivers are not usable. Or, maybe the drivers were built in userspace (ie. not in the kernel space) and it can work. Agh...

Or maybe I'm on crack. . .

no sig, how's that for being a rebel!
