Come in Alone from Loveless by My Bloody Valentine. I just got this album a couple of days ago and I've been listening to it pretty non-stop.

It's hard. But I've already found several points that hit me in just the right way. I think it's going to end up being one of those albums that I love and my wife hates because it requires repeated listening to appreciate. There are a handful of albums like that for us like The Verve's absolutely brilliant debut A Storm in Heaven.

If it's not red and showing substantial musculature, you're wearing it wrong.

Blown a Wish is up now. WTF are they doing to my head? I feel like they're bending something between my ears with this song. Awesome.

Awesome record. Shoegazing music is kinda hard to get into. When U2 were recording Achtung Baby in Berlin, apparently their guitarist would listen to that record at deafening volumes in his hotel room, whilst he was going through his divorce.

I'm Joseph Fritzl, and no windows was my idea.

The phrase "shoegazing music" was new to me until last night when I was googling around. It turns out that Verve album I mentioned above is another example of shoegazing. I guess I like the genre.

The iPad featurette video on apple.com ends on one of my favourite songs of all time, so I've been listening to that a lot. Hallelujah - The Helio Sequence

Kris Kristofferson.

He was on Austin City Limits last night (here locally, anyway) and so I've been listening to him today...I had more of him in my iTunes library than I thought/remembered, so that was a nice surprise.

He can't carry a tune to save his life, but what a gifted writer.

For ACL, my GF's father used to work for KLRU as a camera operator, and ended up filming a fair amount of Austin City Limits shows. I've only been to an ACL taping once, about 5 years ago to see Bright Eyes, who played a nice cover of "Girl from the North Country" with M. Ward and Jim James (from My Morning Jacket). Oh, ACL also has a keg of Lone Star (free) for audience members 21+...not too bad, considering that going to ACL tapings are also free.

Back on topic...lately, I've been listening to the album Farm by Dinosaur Jr and Tarot Sport by Fuck Buttons.

Was listening to a sports talk radio show this morning with a guest host (OK, hosts) who are known for playing eclectic indie music as bumpers coming back from commercial. Usually, they're good, but not my style.

And then came. MarchFourth Marching Band.

Love. This. Might have to seek out more of this NOLA-infused marching band sound.

Guess our wishes don't do dishes or brake repairs...

Picked up the new Editors a few days ago. Love it. It's a bit more...um, I don't know, beaty? It's hard to describe. If you're an Editors fan you'll know what I mean.

So it goes.

Excellent stuff! Definitely pure Mardi Gras Marching Band music - an instant party!

This is basically what all high school marching bands in and around New Orleans sound like, and how a whole lot of today's professional NOLA musicians got their start.

Very timely posting, too - what, with it being the beginning day of Mardi Gras weekend (actually, this year it's unofficially renamed Lombardi Gras). You could stand on the corner of Napoleon and St. Charles avenues 12 hours a day from now till (Fat) Tuesday and hear/see several hundred bands like this (not to mention catching several grocery bags worth of beads).

A YouTube search for Mardi Gras Marching Bands looks pretty promising.

As for touring and recording artists building on this sound, my three prime choices would be (links lead to band homepages, and all are well-represented at the iTMS):

Dirty Dozen Brass Band
The most traditional of the bunch, and the oldest, these guys were the pioneers of making a stage act out of a marching brass band back around 1980 or so. If you're looking for something even more old-school than this, search for Olympia Brass Band.

Rebirth Brass Band
This band has a more modern, funk and hip-hop influenced, take on the traditional marching band sound. Very dance-able stuff!! Like the Dirty Dozen, they've been around since the 1980s, and have had quite a few members move on to projects of their own.

Bonerama
This band (named for having an up-front lead section of 4 trombones) is a fusion of traditional marching brass band style with drum-kit-based funk/jazz/rock style. While they have quite a few incredible originals, they are probably best-known for blowing minds with their covers of classic rock standards by Led Zepp, Hendrix, Allman Bros, Black Sabbath, Edgar Winter, etc. Great bunch of guys, too - I'm on a first-name basis with most of them, and pretty good friends with 3 of them. The two founders used to play in Harry Connick Jr's Big Band. Oh, and listen for them on a few cuts of the upcoming R.E.M album.

All of them tour relentlessly, and I would highly advise bookmarking the Tour Schedule page for each one and checking it every few months.

Two local San Antonio bands. They’ve both got a gig next Friday at a coffeeshop/hookah bar next weekend near me. I hadn’t heard of them until tonight but I’m definitely planning on going next week.

Ugh. I'm once again locked into one of my "hopeless romantic" cycles, so I've been listening to "Love" by Nancy Adams. First written and recorded for the animated "Robin Hood" movie by Disney in 1973, it was most recently used in The Fantastic Mr. Fox.

Aaaand I can't get it out of my head. I hate my fucking brain. I'm onto you, brain.

Today's NPR "Song of the Day" is Bonerama's rendition of the Led Zep version of "When The Levee Breaks".

Very haunting, especially with the electric trombone intro!

Une Annee Sans Lumiere. The Arcade Fire, Funeral. This is the 3rd time today I've listened to this song. And probably the 5th or 6th time I've linked to the album in this thread. I love it.

Ticket Taker by The Low Anthem.

I went out to my (probably) last live show for a while and saw this band randomly at the Cat's Cradle. They were awesome. The lead singer was amazing and the music was extremely beautiful. A very folky sound.

Lately:

Songs Remind Me of You- Annie
I didn't want this song to end.

Sleepyhead- Passion Pit
Truly weird. But then you hear the beat, and the melody, and it's wonderful. (Skip the youtube video; it's a different version)

Seasun- Delorean
Incredible, especially around the halfway point where the vocals finally kick in.

"Make Light" and "The Reeling" are also fantastic songs by Passion Pit.

and whoever mentioned Them Crooked Vultures (in another thread?) was spot on... I've had their album on repeat for the past 2 days.

This is not my usual old-fart New Orleans band post - this is the stuff that college kids are grooving on.

Galactic "Heart of Steel" from The Jimmy Kimmel Show a few weeks ago.

Check out drummer Stanton Moore proving that he's the funkiest geeky-lookin' white boy on the planet, and Cyril Neville's guest vocals providing the gritty edge that the lyrics demand.

Not a damn thing wrong with that! Pretty much a perfect album, IMO.

Been listening to a lot of Dwight Yoakam lately. I'd forgotten I had so many of his albums (11 total)...

I know a lot of you guys go to see live music, and I thought there was a live music thread somewhere but I can't find it.

Anyway, I'm planning on getting tickets to see Clapton at Summerfest this year, sale starts April 10th.

I'm here asking about your guys' experiences with buying tickets for shows.
  • What's the best place?
  • In person, or internet?
  • Buying the tickets: the sooner the better? Or are there exceptions to this rule?
  • What do you know about pre-sales? Does every show have a pre-sale?

Thanks in advance, or Mods feel free to relocate if you feel this belongs elsewhere.
