just a few question about the g4 in powerbooks

1. is it true that all g4's past 2003 are dual core?
2. what exactly is the velocity engine?
3. why is the fsb on the g4 so slow (167MHz) is that without the mulitplyers??? how is that working...thats reallly slow

No, it's not. There are no dual-core G4s yet.

Heh, sorry This is just a topic that has been discussed here for as long as I know this forum ...

The velocity engine is the PowerPC SIMD (Single Instruction, Multiple Data) unit, which allows for very efficient processing of large amounts of data.

As for the bus speed: That's something I haven't figured out yet, either. But I've read at several sources that the bus and I/O are the biggest problem of the PowerPC ...

1st look at the fsb in the g5..not a problem at all

there must be more to the g4's fsb or even archtecutre that allows it to comunicate faster...theres just no way that my pb can start up faster than my p4 with a 800MHz fsb

Startup time doesn't have much (if anything) to do with CPU or FSB speed. This is more about time-outs waiting for existing or non-existing hardware, knowing what hardware to expect (which is much easier for Apple than for Microsoft, of course), and an efficient startup mechanism. Apple has a very intelligend, parallel startup system (called launchd) that allows it to run many things in parallel - unlike Linux, and perhaps unlike Windows (don't know)
