Formerly Gimp-print 4.xx, the open source people who develop the alternative to all of our OEM print drivers, have renamed their print package and are hard at work on a nicely updated version. Evidently 16-bit (or something approximating 16 bit) printing is now available for those who have 10.4
My main concerns: do the drivers for this package eliminate the BS "random margin" problem, which I thought was something I was doing wrong, but which turns out to be something many people experience with Epson and HP printers. The usual deal: Epson blames Apple, Apple blames Epson for not using CUPS (evidently) to write their drivers and nothing gets fixed. Screw Epson. If the open source people can develop drivers for their printers using CUPS / OS X technology, so can they. But they choose not to evidently. Anyone used the 5.0x beta yet? I'd be very curious to hear from any large format (13x19 or above) HP or Epson owners on this. Also curious to see if the 16 bit printing alleviates some of the banding and gamut issues you see in skin tones and hair. http://sourceforge.net/project/shown...ease_id=326131 http://sourceforge.net/projects/gutenprint/ "The power of accurate observation is frequently called cynicism by those who don't have it." - George Bernard Shaw |

Thank god for the name change.
I felt awkward mentioning it to various clients. I don't care that it stands for GNU Image Manipulation Program, try saying "gimp" in a Cambridge, MA doctor's office. ![]() Last edited by johnq : 2005-05-28 at 12:49. |

Well it was originally an extension of GIMP, that's where the name came from but it was really a misnomer ever since it became a standalone thing. Anyway, I really hope some of these ridiculous Epson / HP bugs have been resolved by someone (since they obviously refuse to take responsibility for it). Should've been done two versions ago (10.2).
