I am not a fan, not simply aesthetically, but we all have access to the group list, and are made aware of the moderators/administrators several ways already... at this point it is overkill...

I think that the page the buttons link to is good but the way the button is implemented is not so good. It looks like a bad avatar.

This was something Jack wanted done last year for the UI update we pushed on New Year's Eve. He and I had talked about it off and on since AN was launched until we finally got some of the code tested around August. I've been looking through some things he wanted done and have started moving some old projects forward again, this being one that was closest to completion.

You may know who the admins and moderators are, but what about new users? There's no obvious cue at all. We change our titles periodically; so, those can't be trusted. The bold and italics of the name is very subtle and doesn't clearly convey any special properties. And how many people really know how to get to the group list? There wasn't a single link to it (AFAICT) until I added it to the Posting Guidelines page a few months ago.

I'm open for suggestions as to how better we can implement this. Think about it and give it some time, though.

Something less obtrusive... Perhaps above the three lower buttons with the same width.

Right now it breaks up the flow of information that is ordinarily there.

Not as bad as this one Brad posted some time ago, I think.

My two cents: I like the idea being implemented here. As Brad mentioned, it makes the moderators/administrators stand out a little more clearly. Linking to the "Boss List" is a plus.

On the other hand, the "lozenge" doesn't quite look right to me. Perhaps something more akin to the rectangular buttons would look a little better (like the Reply and Quote buttons in each post).

Tomorrow I'll whip up a new batch of badges that look like the edit/quote/reply buttons. That should make them fit better with the overall theme we've got going.

It's better that I got something implemented in the mean time, though, to motivate me to really finish the job.

It's a great idea - the functionality is good but the aesthetics ....hmmm...

On the other hand, they're much better than the buttons used in the initial test run.

They don't fit the style of the overall design, I suggest something similiar to the Reply and New Thread buttons.

Perhaps 2D "buttons" would be better for this. Even if they look like the other buttons, the group buttons will still be quite dominant, simply because of their size. I do like the idea, though - it's interesting to see who's doing what here.

Ick. I don't like them one bit. Maybe if they looked like the rest of the buttons on the site that would be better. But right now...ick.

Also, there's a little bit more space to the left of the "Administrator" text than to the right of it.

It also rubs it in that you guys have big buttons and I don't have one that says:

It's that the big idea though?

Yeah, but do you *really* need to be identified as a registered member? Everyone *is* one, or they wouldn't be able to post, right?

I like the mod/admin identification, because most of the time they/we have chosen to have silly or humorous titles that give no clue as to the person's actual function. We have so many new members that proper identification is worthwhile.

If you're talking about that turquoise button from Brad's initial test run ... um, no it doesn't. That button in garish and distracting from the clean visual style of the site.

I dunno about the "clean visual style". No offense, but half the time I browse this site at work using IE on a Win2K machine, and this site looks like CRAP in Windows. Is it just me, or what? It looks great in Safari, but IE (yes, I know we all hate it) renders it HORRIBLY. Buttons are odd colors and blocky, nothing fits quite right. Lemme know if I am screwed up here.

The only thing screwed up is Internet Explorer for Windows. It fails to render PNG images, certain colors, and lots of CSS code correctly. If you use practically any other browser from the past five or six years, AppleNova looks great.

Ok, awesome. Thanks for clearing that up, I figured it was just this setup. It does look awesome on my PowerBook, so that is all that really matters.
